More like 2.5 but the mushroom miso soup bumped them up. The rolls here are very meh. The fish is 2 stars but I have to say that everything was very fast. Service was quick but our waiter was not the friendliest, seemed pretty annoyed and idk if he ever did smile.... Cheap prices but at least they match the quality of the food. Left satisfied and there was a lovely small older woman who helped us at the register, wish we could've gotten here. Will I come back? No. Would I recommend? Yes, but only if it was really late and this was the lesser of the two evils.

Went with a big group. Here's what we liked: miso soup, Baltimore roll. The cold ramen was also really good and my toddler loved it. Service was great. Tip: Show up right when the place opens to avoid a wait.

This place is all about quantity over quality. Stay away if you know ANYTHING about good, fresh sushi. They mix ingredients in rolls that on the pallet become something you end up forcing down your throat. I ordered the Hip Hop Roll, Buffalo Volcano Roll and Godzilla Roll. I was most disappointed with the Godzilla the garlic/olive oil with tuna resulted in a old taste opposite of the allure of fresh ingredients it is made with. I wish something could have redeemed my experience but it didn't happen. Not even with good service.

It's late, you want sushi, you go to Edomasa. It's late, you're in Santa Barbara, and almost everything is closed. Heck, it's nearly 1am. You are hungry. Sushi. Edomasa. They are polite and curteous, and the sushi is fresh and the ambience is casual but not crummy. The appetizers and cooked foods are really good, and interesting. Try the enoki in butter - so incredibly yummy. Try the eggplant with miso, wow! Also, it's not that expensive, which is really high on my list, since I tend to really go for it with sushi restaurants.

I'm updating this to 4 stars. Miso ramen is delicious, sashimi and rolls are good. Decent place for Japanese food, but not my first choice. I'm fairly new to SB and still exploring, but at this point I would chose Itsuki over this one.

LOVE that it's open late night. Just be careful if you have a larger party... you might have to wait a bit. The Ika Fry (essentially calamari) is SUPER yummy. Big chunks, but the batter is nice and light. I also really liked their Sunomono. Very refreshing before the meal. The Kaki Fry (Fried Oysters) are also pretty decent. The oysters are HUGE. I'm not sure if it's something in the water, but they're like 4 times bigger than oysters at other restaurants. First time I went I had the Saba Shioyaki and the Miso Salmon appetizers because I wasn't terribly hungry. Wow, didn't realize they would be so big! Saba was good, but it had bones, which were a pain to pick out. The salmon was really hard and dry. Not a fan of that one. Second time I went I had the Miso Ramen. It was good, but instead of the standard leafy green + bamboo combo at most other places, it came with corn. Tasty and satisfying nonetheless. Another item of note: My little sister got the Yakiniku dinner and it was HUGE (and yummy, according to her). One reason for the dropped star was because the service was a little lacking. We were waiting a lot: to order, for the bill, as well as refills of water/tea.

If you're looking for inexpensive/generic sushi this is not the place for you... At the same time, it was definitely not OVERpriced; I didn't get a combo but the combos looked to me like very good deals. The individual "special" rolls and sushi orders were very fresh and tastefully, delicately prepared, so the price didn't bother me. Reminded me of my favorites in LA... best I've had so far in SB. Can't beat the late hours! Stumbled upon this last night when a friend and I had a late night craving. No complaints about the service-- attentive and friendly, even though it was steadily busy. I plan to go back next time I have extra $$ to spend on a nicer sushi dinner, but until then I'll stick to my cheaper, to-go style restaurants.

So parking and finding this place is a bit tricky espcially at night But I'm guessing once you know where it is you can easily find it and also find ways to park on a busy night. We ate here on a Satruday afternoon and was pretty empty but by 8pm it was packed and carazzy. The sushi is pretty fresh. Shoot it better be you are in SB right next to the pacific ocean so there's no excuse for stale sushi. The teryaki beef was tender and tasty. Their specialty rolls were very well made. None of that sauced covered dont even see what was in side the roll type special. But honestly not sure if I would come back unless I've tried all the other sushi place around SB.

I am used to excellent cheap sushi being from Seattle, Wa. This is my favorite place so far. Not super cheap, but lam willing to sacrifice for the freshness and quality of these rolls. I have been to a couple of other sushi places which seem to cater to the those who are easing into the realm of raw fish (many dressed up non-traditional rolls ie. mexican-sushi fusion--not for me, thanks). I need no introduction just give me the sweetest freshest you have, rice and dressings not needed for me to slurp it down. I love the atmosphere, unassuming, simple, quintessential Japanese restaurant environment. The wait staff are friendly, though service can be slow. Sushi is very good, not amazing, but Edomasa has earned its place as my go-to sushi restaurant in my residence away from home.

TIP: try the toro and Japanese sea scallops The atmosphere here is typical of most sushi places; nothing extraordinary, though a bit bigger than most. We decided to try a sampling of dishes, from nigiri to cut rolls to baked entrees. The toro was exceptional; the even fattiness and lack of tendon in the cuts we received was outstanding, and the market price for the day was very reasonable considering the quality. The highlight of the meal was the Japanese sea scallops which were... perfect. The "special yellow tail" was definitely well above average and the salmon was fresh. Now for some pickiness: the chefs are obviously NOT traditional sushi chefs, and it showed in the way the nigiri was made. The rice was too dry and was packed together like a brick, what you'd expect from prepackaged sushi that had been refrigerated at a grocery store... the good quality of the meat did provide some redemption. The cut rolls we had were average; not spectacular but nothing wrong with them. We sampled three; not much to say about them. The gyoza were okay, the steamed mushroom dish tasted liked buttered toast (in a sorta good way... if you try them, you'll see what I mean), and the beef dish we had was so bland that I didn't finish it. For dessert we had tempura fried red bean ice cream. The portion was HUGE! 3x what I expected... I was a bit disappointed that it was just red bean ice cream, with not actual red beans added, but that was my misconception. They do use quite a lot of tempura batter. Overall, I applaud the quality of the fish used in the ngiri; if you stop here, be sure to try the toro and Japanese scallops.

WORST Sushi I have ever had! No flavor at all! We got there right when it opened and still waited 45 mins for our food! Very porr customer service. I almost told the waitress that I wasn't going to pay for the order but couldn't find myself to do it! I don't know why this place gets some good reviews? Have they not had good sushi before? Waiste of time/money. Never again. Sorry to give sucha bad review but STEP IT UP!

  • Farida A.

I was so disappointed in this place!!! I cannot stress that enough. The menu was impressive, I'll give them that much. But the rolls we got were neither tasty nor fresh. The rainbow roll was disgusting. The fish were stale and smelly. The buffalo roll was decent but not something I would order again. It had way too much cream cheese. The service was spotty. It took forever to flag down our waittress to get the check. I don't understand why this place was so highly rated. Maybe it's popular with late-night college kids who are too drunk to realize they're eating crap?

Great food, good service. The sushi is definitely good. The soups are also good, and the combos are delicious! Go for the mochi NOT the red bean ice cream (it tastes just like vanilla)

  • Deirdre P.

I had such amazingly high hopes for this place as my BFF just loves this place so much so that she bought the shirt! I ordered this buffalo roll that others have yelped about..imo it tasted like spicy cream cheese! I couldn't taste anything else but the cream cheese! The philly roll has the seaweed on the outside rather then on the inside, which I'm not a fan of. Service was not very good either! We were like looking around to get someone to come over and give us our bill. Also, the hubby ordered a side salad, which never came. boo Overall, I may come here again with my BFF, but there are so many other places to try that I don't think that I will be givin them a second chance anytime too soon. Oh and for a CAN of soda= $2!! You know they go to costco and make like at least $1.50 +tax+tip on this! without offering any refills! sigh-not a fan of that

Far and away my favorite sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara. Open late night this became an all too often pit stop after some downtown drinking at the bars. Very reasonable prices, good fish (if not quite up to par with Arigato), the friendliest chefs around, and some great unique appetizers and starters. I highly, highly recommend the miso eggplant or the enoki in butter sauce for starters. Two of the best Japanese appetizers I have tried at any Sushi restaurant and I go to most every one I can find!

This place was empty at about 6pm when we rolled in. And it's actually nicer that way. Around 7pm is when it starts getting busy and loud...at least on a Saturday. The prices worked well for us on a budget. Special rolls were between 6-10 dollars-ish. And they had regular rolls for less. The serving sizes were smaller than I was used to, but it's probably more of the average (the sushi places in my town serve large rolls). If anything, the portions were just right. With an appetizer, three special rolls, and a tempura ice cream, the bill came out to about $35 for two people. Oh yea, and they have quite an extensive appetizer list. Pretty good portions for the price. Would totally come back again. Cute little venue. Good service. Great food.

If you're looking for decent sushi at a decent price, this is one place to consider. A friend and I went to Edomasa for the first time tonight, and even though I've had various sushi rolls for many, many years, I'd never really tried sashimi until now. We split the sashimi appetizer. Not having had previous sashimi experiences to compare to, I can't say first-hand how it ranks, but it tasted great to me and my friend had nothing to complain about. We also split a Rainbow roll and Marina roll (crab, avocado, eel and cucumber) which were quite tasty, although I should have known better than to get to rolls that have the crab/mayonnaise mix (as I do not really like mayonnaise). The other rolls that were on the menu all also sounded really good, and I hope I have a chance to come back here and try more. We were there rather late in the evening, but the staff was quite friendly and helpful -- especially when our server discovered our table was uneven and rocking quite a bit and he immediately helped us move to an adjacent table.

I went here on a Saturday night with a party of 7. The service was horrible, our waiter hardly checked on us and just mumbled to us. No one understood him. And he didnt even put the plates infront of the person that ordered them, he just put them down on the table. Really?! The food was ok, not anything special. One of the rolls that we ordered had a bad taste to it, I'm thinking maybe I just didnt like it. Overall, I wouldnt go back here. There has to be a better sushi place in SB, even if the prices are decent. =(

I love Edomasa! Great prices, huge sushi rolls, good sake, and great selection of sushi rolls and other dishes. They also have great mochi ice cream and a candy jar for dessert! I love the boxed sets, quite a deal! You may have to wait a bit for a table but it's very worth it. There is usually nearby parking too! Wow, living in San Francisco now, I miss Edomasa!

After entering the restaurant, I immediately noticed the large numbers stuck on the back of the chairs of the sushi bar area. I don't think that's very appealing to the eye, but I suppose that method makes food running easier for them. Anyway, we ordered the Baltimore roll and the Lobster roll. The Baltimore roll the first roll I ever had with cream cheese, and I must say that it was pretty decent. The Lobster roll was okay...after taking each bite I was immediately hit with a huge after taste of wasabi. I don't really care for wasabi, but if you do then this roll would be perfect for you! I don't really like how they charge you $2.50 for Miso soup. That is by far the most I've ever paid for it.

Being that this was the first time I was taking my fiance for the full-on UCSB tour, I was a bit nervous that Edomasa wouldn't be as good as I thought it was in college. Thank goodness our experience was even better than I remembered! Four of us came here for dinner on Friday night. The three of them ordered three $20 sushi and sashimi combinations, and I ordered my college usual rainbow roll. The sushi here is good and fresh and VERY reasonably priced. You don't come here expecting omakase-quality sushi. The sushi is good but not like $100 per person type good. The fried oysters were only $5.50 and it came with 7 huge pieces that weren't all fatty on the inside. And the tempura ice cream...OH the tempura ice cream. It's still the giant fried ice cream I remember that's the size of my head. LOVE IT! The menu is extensive, and the service is attentive. For all of this, Edomasa is still my number one sushi place in SB --- hands down.

One of the lasting, wonderful things about sushi is the camarderie with the sushi chef. Certainly, the questions about culture, fish, and etiquette make the experience more than food, but atmosphere, too. Although we have had many fine meals at Edomasa, I am compelled to complain bitterly about the experience tonight. We arrived after seven, and the sushi bar was uncrowded. We sat freely, only realizing later that our chef, and one other of the sushi chefs were Latino. The experience that followed was unlike any other that I have had at a sushi restaurant. Our orders were not recognized, requiring a side conversation to a Japanese speaking chef. There was no "chit-chat," nor small talk that we usually associate with the sushi atmosphere. Indeed the conversation was blunt, curt, and unfriendly, even when we digressed to inquiring about the "Spanish" word for an item. (Imagine that! How often have you gone to a sushi bar and inquired about the culture and vocabulary of an item or object in Spanish?) This was not a fun evening. The sushi was standard and not inspiring. The delivery was mundane. I'm sure that the owner was making effort to control the cost of labor. Indeed, we found some of the conversation of the employees behind the bar offensive. The "chinga" part of the Spanish vocabulary should have no place in a restaurant whose emphasis is upon Asian cuisine. This poor rating is particularly focused upon the sushi bar atmosphere and the delivery of food. In our past, we have had great sushi here. We hope things change. In the meantime, we will frequent "Ahi," on upper State Street in Santa Barbara.

This place seems to be a hit with college students looking for a a decent priced sushi place. But i've had friends get sick here, i've been sick here. I don't know what it is about this place but i would fore go coming here for a number of other places.

First and Foremost, the Sushi in Santa Barbara does not compare to in the Bay Area or LA. But Edomasa definitely sets the bar and is the best Sushi restaurant in SB. Their sushi is authentic and they have plethora of unique sushi options. I also like how it's a hole in the wall, hidden gem in Santa Barbara. I always feel welcomed by the waiters every time I go. They are very friendly and down to earth people. Another great thing about Edomasa is that it opens late (M-Th Midnight; F-Sun 1 am) which is saying a lot because most sit down places close by 10:30 in Santa Barbara. I highly recommend this place!

  • Greg K.

At Edomasa expect good, but not great, Japanese food at a very moderate price in a no frills atmosphere. Sushi, sashimi and rolls are all nicely presented. There are a number of combination dinners included on the menu to round out the offering. A decent selection of sake and Japanese beer are available. This spot is very popular with locals who come here for the food as the decor leaves much to be desired. Think formica tables, thinly padded stackable metal chairs and way to many dry-erase boards noting menu additions. Contrary to some reviews, they don't take reservations on Friday and Saturday evenings. From what I can tell, they also have a very brisk take out business. This might be the way to go.

Great for those late nights when all you want is sushi...and green tea fried icecream. I was NOT happy about having old tempura crab in my sushi, but everything else is good. I've gone here too many times, but it's satisifying, especially if you venture outside Rolls and do their dinners plates. I've had their beef dish and it was great, their mussels are also quite tasty. I've tried their curry udon, which was pretty good and had me craving another bowl for a week or so after. Their tempura icecream, however, is awesome amazing!

Decent sushi..nothing spectacular. On the evening I went here, my friend and I had planned to visit Arigato (my favorite sushi place), but he couldn't afford it. So we went to Edomasa, which came highly recommended from him. We arrived around 7:30 on a Friday night and only waited 5 or so minutes until we were seated. We shared the tiger roll, the Mexican roll, and the crunchy roll. These rolls are big. If you want quantity, you will find it here. The Mexican roll was slathered in spicy sauce. Now, I like a bit of spice, but the fact that the sauce was tossed all over the roll turned me off. I would much prefer the Fiesta roll from Arigato, where they serve sauce on the side and you can dip it in. Plus, Arigato tasts fresher and more dynamic..more innovative. Anyways, it's decent sushi, but nothing I would return to.

This is hands-down the best Japanese restaurant in all of Santa Barbara. Since I have moved, every time I go back I visit Edomasa as a first priority. My Japanese friend knows the owner. That's why I started going, and since I found Edomasa I never went to any other Japanese restaurant in Santa Barbara. Edomasa has the best ramen. If you appreciate Japanese food and understand that Japanese food does not mean only sushi, you will love Edomasa. Their sushi is great too. But I always order the Ramen set. Their ramen is to die for. The service is always great. Everything is so fresh and so so cheap compared to most sushi places. If you want sake bombs, put on your UCSB sweatshirt and go to State St. But if you are serious about your Japanese dining experience, go to Edomasa.

Edomasa is one of the few places in Santa Barbara that closes late, in a town notorious for a lack of a nightlife. Off the beaten path of State Street, Edomasa is local's place and definitely not a tourist trap. Priced well below highly rated Arigato Sushi on State Street, Edomasa fulfills a sushi lover's salivating tastebuds at a very affordable price. This late night sushi joint features fresh sushi and a changing menu of specialty nigiri sushi based on the day's catch. Gems of the menu include: The spicy cajun tuna, a tuna with a spice rub that delicately cuts through the fattyness of the tuna hitting the tongue with just a touch of heat and leaving you wanting more. Sweet shrimp, a raw sweet shrimp tops a small bed of sushi rice and accompanied with the cunchy fried shrimp heads on the side. Anago (Seawater Eel), one of the few places in Santa Barbara to serve the brother to the more common unagi (freshwater eel). Anago has a slighty more fishy taste and is covered with the same sauce. Mirugai (Giant Clam or Geoduck), occasionally found on the specialty menu, if you see it on the menu give it a try! Negi Toro (Chopped fatty tuna), not listed on the menu. Ask them to prepare it, you'll get a smile :]

We were on a short vacation from out of town (Orange County)Came here on a recommendation from our waiter at another dining establishment the night before. The service here was horrible. Our sushi chef was unengaged.. He was borderline rude. He seemed put out whenever we ordered something. Probably was the worst service in a sushi bar we have ever encountered. We will definitely try another sushi restaurant the next time we are in SB.

It was okay both times I went--but I feel like if I would just put $10-15 dollars into a sushi meal elsewhere I will be much more satisfied and pleased! I was drawn in by the inexpensive prices and especially their $10.95 dinner special--but after two visits am not too impressed. The first time my avocado rolls were hard--the avocado was clearly not ripe. I disliked (and also did the second time) the ginger dressing on the salad. The second time (this weekend) I order the dinner special and gyoza--did NOT like the gyoza--not crunchy enough for me and i could taste the pork way too much. On the bright side my avocado rolls were much improved, but I continued to dislike the ginger dressing on the salad and I felt that the chicken teriyaki was overdressed with teriyaki sauce. Not a bad place, i just prefer elsewhere

Was hunting on Yelp for a sushi joint to hit up during a recent stay in SB and came across Edomasa. Love how late it is open as they lined up perfectly with our schedule, but the reason we went was not a reason I would come back for: The sushi. The two rolls we ordered were so-so and I really didn't like the rice (was very loose). What I did love was the Karage with a bowl of Saracha sauce. This is my new go to appetizer at any sushi house that serves this, healthy I know. Also had the deep fried oyster with the Karage and I wasn't overly excited about them. Service was a little on the slow side too.

The rolls were not alot. About 4-5 pieces for rainbow, hip hop, edomasa and spider. I was a bit dissapointed because for the price of the sushi, it wasn't that great. the highlight of this meal was the cucumber sumono salad! it was DELICIOUS. by far the best out of itsuki, sushi teri. I also liked their tempura green tea ice cream!! sooo good! i'd reccomend that! It was just so yummy in your tummy! Our total was about 90 bucks but that was EXPENSIVE. our waitress wasn't that nice but it was alright since it was a busy night. You know this place is legit when they are japanese!

Their sushi is pretty decent; better than I can get in my hometown, at least. My favorite thing at Edomasa, though, has to be their curry udon. It's delicious. I NEVER liked curry I got from any Japanese restaurant until I had theirs. It's awesome.

Best sushi in Santa Barbara, fast and friendly service, and good deals on combinations (also, they'll let you double up on something if you want to avoid another, which is great for California roll haters such as myself:).

Went to Edomasa yesterday (Thursday) around 10PM. A big plus for being one of the few places open that late on a weekday around Santa Barbara. It was also able to seat all ten of us without any waiting which was awesome. The price was decent and the fish quality was very good. I ordered the chiraki sushi which was various pieces of sashimi over a bowl of sushi rice. It came with 11 pieces for me. It included 2 pieces of egg which was good but I was hoping for every piece to be some sort of seafood. Still, for the price, I enjoyed a good meal and was full when I left. Will definitely come again.

  • Annie T.

The sushi here is usually pretty fresh. I've only had one or two problems with my fish and I come here all the time. I like their carpaccio dishes, yellow tail is my favorite. The sushi and sashimi combination plate is a good amount for my bf and I to share. It also comes with a ca or spicy tuna roll, miso, sunomono salad, rice, and a mochi ice cream. The rolls here are simple but good. They don't get too extravagant with their special rolls but they are refreshing. The prices have gone up a little but it's still pretty affordable. Good place for sushi :).

Went to SB to visit friends, and we decided to go eat sushi. I feel bad for Santa Barbarian's. Rolls were huge, with so much rice it was unbelievable. The taste was so, so. Then we hit State St. to grab some beers, and then the stomach kicked in.... WTF BAD SUSHI oh and crying babies at that. Felt bad telling my friend his placed sucked, but oh well. Sorry SB, come to LA and drive down Ventura "sushi" Blvd and try it out here.

I have been here several times, only because it is the only place to find late-night sushi in sb. Some of the sashimi is decent (salmon, sea bass, yellowtail), but others I did not care for (and I generally love sushi). The rolls are full of mayo and are not authentic. The sushi chefs somehow always seem to be in a bad mood. Spend a little more money and go to Arigato on State.

If I could I would give 4.5 stars. I went here on a date and the atmosphere was really fun. I really enjoyed my rolls, we also split a noodle dish that was good. I would bring someone here for a cool date.

Pretty decent. Nothing too special. Owner creeps me out a bit, but other than that.. definitely worth going to. Bring your friends, not a date. Pros: Cheap You pay for what you get Cons: Pretty damn ghetto outside Next to some sketchy Mexican restaurant/bakery? Parking lot is shady The interior is an eyesore

This place has always been my hubby's fave spot for sushi whenever we're in Santa Barbara. It has also became my fave spot also. This past weekend my hubby got his ususal delux sushi dinner, which was great. I tried something different and got the broiled yellow-tail colar bone dinner set. It was really good. Nice and moist and a touch of sea salt sprinkled on top. It comes with rice, miso soup, and mochi. For desert we decided not to get our mochi and requested for tempura green tea ice cream. Looks like it was made to order because when it came out the whip cream was melting. The ice cream was nice and hard inside not like some other places where its melting like water. We also got a Toyko roll, tempura yellow tail with avocado rolled with a California roll, I think. It was okay, I thought it would of been raw instead of cooked. I guess I was busy looking at "yellow-tail" and left out "tempura". =)

I only took one star off because the service there just seems inexperienced at times. Honestly i dont care, my girl friend however who worked in restaurants for years became very annoyed when they brought out the main dish right after they brought out the appetizers. Other then that they are very friendly. The food is top notch however and I will be back.

If you like spicy Japanese mayonnaise, which I do, then Edomasa is a good choice. All their spicy rolls have the spicy mayonnaise, and it's awesome. I like edomasa because they have a huge menu with a lot of different choices, and everything is pretty tasty. I've never had something there that I didn't enjoy. I especially like the basic rolls there such as spicy tuna and spicy california rolls (gotta have that mayo)! Their agedashi tofu is also really good. And save room for the red bean ice cream...mmmmm. I'm giving them 4 stars only because it's not the best sushi I've ever had - but it's really good. They also don't have a true "crunchy roll."

Late night sushi on a Monday night. I had the Santa Barbara roll. It was pretty good, but I've had better. My friend had the green tea ice cream, and that was pretty good too. The place is small and simple. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant and isn't trying to be something else. The wait staff was really nice and attentive, even though we were the last ones in there and I'm sure they just wanted us to leave! I'll probably come back for those late night sushi cravings.

Decent fish quality for a very good price. There are a good variety of $10-$15 dollar entrées, or you can eat your heart out with the $20 Sushi & Sashimi combo. If you love sushi but are on a budget, this place will do nicely. Also, the mochi icecream for desert is fantastic.

Pretty decent sushi, great for late night meals since they're open until midnight. Probably in contention for 4th or 5th best sushi in town, which isn't shabby considering how many sushi places there actually are!

I've had edomasa 4 times, each visit has be worse than the latter. My first visit we shared the rainbow roll (excellent), hip hop roll (not my thing), buffalo volcano roll (good, I've had better though), crunchy roll (not bad). Second, I can't remember exactly but I had their futomaki and it was really good, their tamago was great. Third, rainbow roll (fish wasn't as fresh as usual), and the futomaki wasn't nearly as good as before. My last visit, I noticed both their ginger and wasabi went way down in quality. I ordered the buffalo volcano roll and godzilla roll. The buffalo volcano came out cold (it has baked scallops on top that are supposed to be warm) and the godzilla roll tasted funny. There are better places to get sushi for around the same value, but go ahead and try it if you haven't.

They provided very bad service and poor quality of food which made my Santa Barbara trip end in a sort of disappointment. I used to visit them once a while when I lived in Santa Barbara and was fine w/ everything. But starting now, I am pretty sure I will never want to go back in there for any food anymore. Like owner like waiter/waitress... that is all I can say...

I've been here countless times. I can pretty much tell you what I order with friends (Volcano, spider, edomasa, futomaki, santa barbara, and a large sake)The sushi is pretty cheap for the given portions compared to most sushi restaurants that I've been to, and pretty tasty. Each sushi is pretty large as well that it's difficult to put everything in your mouth. But hey, I'm not too picky about that, as long as it's tasty and satisfies my stomach, then pfft who cares! The atmosphere is really nice as well. Outside it looks like a run down shack, but inside it's a nice dim setting. It gets really crowded on Fridays and weekdays dinner time. Parties of 4 or less you typically get easier seating. Anymore it starts to get hard.

When I lived in Santa Barbara I would eat here twice a week. When I come back to visit eating here is a priority. The food is fantastic, the service is great and I love the low key casual atmosphere. The owner works there most nights and was a riot, he would occasionally drink sake with my husband and I. This place is one of the things I miss most about Santa Barbara and I look forward to my next visit here!

We are quite spoiled in Santa Barbara with several excellent sushi bars. I have been visiting Edomasa, just under a mile from my home, for about 15 years now and they have never disappointed me. They are extremely generous with their amount of food they stuff in their rolls, and their prices are very reasonable. Furthermore, their service is excellent and since I frequent them often, they treat myself and my friends like family. There is quite a bit of merriment to go along with the amazingly tasty fare, which is a great combination. My favorite items there are the Seafood Salad (strips of 7 kinds of sashimi laid over mixed baby greens...VERY healthy!), the Spider Roll, and the basic Rainbow Roll. If you're looking for affordable Japanese fare of any sort (their menu is VAST, by the way), at an affordable price, look no further. Edomasa is the place!

great place. pretty much only sit down restaurant for late night. decent size. simple design. maybe im partial because i spent a whole lot of time here while in school but honestly i don't care. give it a try recommendations: sb roll. scallops, asparagus, fake crab, rice rolled in tofu paper

And then there was Edomasa. As in, much, much better than Arigato. You might stumble across it, tucked aside an unknown area that, *gasp*, you actually have to drive to. It's worth it. The outside portends to be this cheesy strip-mall sushi joint. But the inside, and the food, is spot-on. Very authentic. A long sushi bar, Japanese traditional, with seasoned sushi chefs. Well worth the trip.

I never saw this place because I guess they are only open at night. We (7+ people) went around 9pm on a Thursday night and they quickly put together a table for us. The service was attentive, and plesant. I missed not sitting at the bar, but with a big group thats impossible. All I had was a Shrimp Tempura Roll and a Miso soup, but it was great and my total with Tax & Tip was only $8.00. The rolls the other people in my group ordered looked even better, and they go there on a weekly basis. I think I found my new favorite sushi spot! Another plus was that they were very accomodating to splitting the bill for 7+ people with cash and credit!

AFTER MIDNIGHT SUSHI in Santa Barbara on a Friday or Saturday. 3 solid, well-deserved stars just for that, and +1 for fresh fish. Some of the pieces *are* cut a bit huge and can be hard to eat in just one bite (sushi etiquette), but it's forgivable. A great late night snack. I don't think I know of any other decent Asian/Japanese restaurants in the area that are open after 11PM. Do you?

My advice: eat at the sushi bar! First time I went, the sushi was alright - we ordered special rolls and some of them were a little strange. Then we've ordered as take-out, which is good - quick, easy pick up, no problem. The last time we went, we sat at the sushi bar right in front of the chef. He was funny, entertaining, and made us some really great rolls. My boyfriend and I were both very impressed, especially since our last visits were good, not great. Good prices too. We had to try out a few of the special rolls to find the ones we liked, but they were mighty tasty. And quick!

This place is probably the best sushi in SB. My friend used to work here so Ive been many times. Excellent service. I liek others do not enjoy the large 4 piece rolls but you can ask them to cut them as 6 piece instead for any roll. Their tempura fried ice cream is scrumptuous, you really cannot go here and not order it. I also enjoy their salmon skin salad, which is large and not pricey. Only downside of this place, like all Sb places is its price, its not exactly cheap.

  • Dakota R.

Fantastically good and fresh sushi for a relatively moderate price. Big menu and a locals joint. Not the greatest ambiance, but the staff is friendly and usually little to no wait since it's a large space. Baltimore Roll and Hip Hop are favorites. Sashimi and tuna carpaccio is incredible. Rolls are cut thick and big, 5 to a cut, so if you want a bit smaller, ask for 6 piece cut.

My boyfriend and I are big fans of Edomasa. We eat there a few times a month. When the cravings begin for sushi, we are there. Good food, good portions. The crunchy roll is our new favorite. Another fave is the deluxe Buffalo Volcano (I'm sure that's the name). We usually order different items, off the wall boards. Good stuff. We've enjoyed just about everything we've ordered there. And, so enjoy the wonderfull taste in our mouths as we are eating. Hard to explain. The flavors, combinations, just so good. The wait staff is hit and miss, although, they do try hard. You either get all you food at once (miso soup, appetizers, salad and entree/rolls), or, you spend a little time waiting. It's all good. Just gives us more time to decide what we are ordering next.

It was our first time visiting Edomasa. Heard good reviews about it and online ratings show 3.6 - 4.0. Our experience is a 5 star all the way. We love the atmosphere, low key, casual, somewhat rustic with Japanese style decor. The staff was friendly and on key. The sushi chef was precise and clean with his presentation on each order. The seafood was very fresh, and the head sushi chef was full of humor and welcoming, the extra Japanese courtesy we were not expecting. We definitely recommend this place ;)

Dear Edomasa owner, Yesterday (May 24, 2014) was the first day in my Japanese-food-loving life that I have encountered a rude waitress at a Japanese restaurant anywhere in the world. It surprised me because it happened at Edomasa, a place where I had always had a positive experience when I ate their from time to time in the past 7 years. In fact, I have very rarely encountered a rude waiter/waitress anywhere in this friendliest-town-in-the-world Santa Barbara. That's why I was taken aback when the waitress who was taking order from me and my friends yesterday, around 7:04 PM, gave us an attitude, raised her voice, and made us feel extremely unwelcome. What exactly happened? It was silly. When I tried to order by saying "Number 117 Assorted Sashimi, please." The waitress answered, "we do not order by number." So I said, "I'd like to have the assorted sashimi." The waitress said sternly: "we do not order by number." Baffled, I repeated myself, "it's the assorted sashimi." The waitress said again, just like a computer stuck in an infinite loop, with the volume increased and the tone stiffened, "we do not order by number, you point to the item on menu and tell me what you order." I was unable to determine whether she was intelligently challenged, or it was a language barrier, or she was going through a difficult phase in her emotional life, but I wasn't qualified to offer a medical diagnosis. I only know that I was a patron at a business and I deserved not to be treated that way. I stood up, closed the menu book, and said, "I'm sorry but I will go some place else." My friends and I then left. We went to another Japanese restaurant in Goleta and had a wonderful evening. I wasn't sure if this waitress was an employee or an owner/partner. If she's the owner, then that would be unfortunate because probably nothing can improve. But if she's an employee, I hope that my review and the details given here is helpful to the owner/manager to identify the problem and take a correct course of action. Whoever she is and whatever distress condition she was in at the time, I hope she recover and find a way to love people again. I wish her and Edomasa all the best. I am writing this review not because of hate or anger but out of my feeling of obligation to tell the community so nobody has as to be subjected to this rudeness again. Best Regards, - the Chinese-looking guy in khakii shorts and a dark blue polo shirt

If you are going for drinks and a California Roll u are safe otherwise don't go! I normally go to Arigato but got talked into going here. Not only was it same price as Arigato ( for certain rolls) the fish was not fresh and customer service wasn't the friendliest or quickest. Avoid!

Edomasa's niche is that it's open late. Stumbled in around 10pm, we shared a salad with crab, some soup and a roll. Everything was prepared in front of us, super fast and super fresh. Prices were excellent and the food was great.

This place was mehh. The food was OK, nothing outstanding about it. The sushi wasn't orgasmic and melt-in-your-mouth like other places. The service was just as bland. We had a party of six and they seated us at a table for four and wouldn't let us add another table. So we were pretty squished. I wouldn't eat here again. It isn't the best, but it also isn't the worst. There are plenty of other sushi places in SB.

I go here solely because their chicken teriyaki bowl is delicious and huge. But they charge $1 extra for brown rice. Why should I get charged for making a healthier choice? I realize it might cost them more but surely not $1 a bowl. Also, they add 5% onto your bill for take-out, plus they don't honor the Axxess Card deal if you take-out. I've tried sushi 3 times and have never been happy with it. I also don't find it convenient that they're not open until 6pm. Going to try to find another spot for my teriyaki fix.

We got the sashimi appetizer, good quality fish. Also had the De La Vina roll. Enjoyed the flavor combinations and spicy/crunchy kick. The quantity of the appetizer and roll is on the smaller side but don't hesitate to try it yourself. We also ordered a ramen soup that was huge and very flavorful. On top of the good food, we enjoyed the company of the very friendly head sushi chef. Overall very satisfied with our dining experience.

Weak Went there on a Saturday evening. No problem getting a seat. Ordered Rolls, Spicy Tuna, California, Salmon Skin & Santa Barbara. All the rolls were larger than any other place I have ever been, which might seem cool, until you try to put it in your mouth. My daughter had to cut hers in half in order to try it. Spicy Tuna & California Rolls were bland. Salmon Skin was crunchy, but the salmon was overcooked and very dry. The Santa Barbara was full of creamyness and you couldn't taste anything else. It was also suppose to have shrimp in it and the two that I cut open had none. Service also wasn't that great. Yea, I won't be back.

We like this place and come here frequently but the blonde Asian male host was extremely rude. We asked for the wait time and he responded with "30 minutes, but I don't have anything". We responded we would wait and that perhaps the bar would open up. His response was "no. Doesn't matter. It won't". Our vibe was he just wanted people to leave so he wouldn't have to deal with a waiting list. Poor customer service.

One of the few places in town that open late, making it a convenient and fun place to hang out with your swimming buddies after night swim at Los Banos. Pitcher of beer comes with edamame, can't go wrong with a grilled mackerel dinner or hamachi kama (yellowtail collar). Rolls are good. Service, depending on who you get, is either good or adequate. They just get too busy and don't ever have enough waitstaff.

Came to this restaurant as a second choice, and will never return. The menu does not reflect what you will recieve on your plate, and the service is horrible. We had such a rude waitress who would roll her eyes when you asked for something more, like extra sauce or plates. The food was either lacking in flavor or had WAY too much salt. The dishes that we had ordered in our group had little to no food presentation. Anyway, I think the only reason this place is still making it, is the fact that it stays open late, because it's definitely not the food or service.

We ordered a deluxe love boat and beef bowl for three people. I ordered a peach sake too. The sashimi, nigiri, rainbow roll from the boat were not particularly fresh but not bad either. They were out of uni, which was a bummer. The beef was slightly burnt and chewy. My peach sake was simply peach juice with a splash of sake. The male servers were very friendly and approachable whereas I had to wave both my arms and call out for the older female servers. If I were to ever desperately crave late night sushi and an empty wallet I might return here out of convenience. Otherwise, I think I'd rather go for a longer drive for better quality sushi for better prices elsewhere.

  • Rachael T.

For the price, it is not even worth eating here. 1) The rice were over cooked (soft) and unseasoned to make sushi. 2) The rolls were wrapped so loosely that the fillings (shrimp, avocado...) were falling out. 3) Terrible service! We were there for approximately 45mins and our water wasn't refilled until our last 10mins. There was, however, a very helpful young man who helped us refill our water. Thank you to him! :-) If you are hungry and don't mind eating anything, go to in-n-out. You'll have a better food and service experience. Save your sushi/ Japanese food money for another place.

When I moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, my first expedition the night I signed my lease was to find a sushi restaurant that I could settle into. My lady and I walked State Street and found a place -- not impressed. So the next weekend I looked to Yelp for some insight and found Edomasa. When I entered the restaurant I was greeted by the hostess and promptly seated at the bar. The sushi chef handed me a menu (which was pretty extensive) and continued making his orders. I started with a few different pieces of nigiri: tune, yellowtail, salmon. The fish tasted fresh and the pieces were decent size. Nothing special though. I then moved onto a few specialty rolls basked on Yelper suggestions: the softshell crab roll, volcano roll and the buffalo volcano rolls. I'm sure there's a few others in there that I can't remember. They were your standard, baked, battered, fried, covered in mayo and eel sauce rolls. Again, not impressed. It still perplexes me that there's such a lack of sushi restaurants in Santa Barbara. I think coming from Los Angeles I'm definitely jaded. There's a sushi restaurant on nearly every corner, which forces restaurants to compete for customers. I have to believe that Edomasa survives based on the Rule of Scarcity. If you're craving sushi in SB, Edomasa is basically your only option at the time of me writing this. It's not bad, but nothing earth shattering. 3-stars: "A-OK"

Delicious sushi and great prices! I was there for the first time this past weekend and was impressed by their amazing deals. I got the Ladies Set which included 3 hand rolls, miso soup, salad, and mochi ice cream for $13.95! I was definitely satisfied. I'd recommend the eel, spicy tuna, and scallop hand rolls! I can't wait to go back!

I'm from NorCal and have been dying to get some really good sushi in SB! After looking up sushi restaurants around the area, I decided I'd give this place a shot first. I had the "Special avocado roll" $12.50 and the "Santa Barbara roll" $8.50. Each order comes with the standard 8 pieces. The service was pretty fast and friendly. They have the good quality pickled ginger and they give you a lot of it which is nice. The rolls were pretty good but nothing to write home about. The Special avocado roll was basically a dragon roll drenched in a cloyingly sweet sauce. The first two bites where good, but then it just felt like I was eating candy after that, and I usually enjoy sweet rolls. It was DEFINITELY not worth $12.50!! The Santa Barbara roll was pretty good as well but not too exciting. It had shrimp tempura, scallops, asparagus, and some crab, with spicy sauce. I guess the "spicy" sauce was mixed into the crab with some mayonnaise. It wasn't spicy at all. It had a nice subtle flavor, the mayonnaise actually made this roll taste a bit sweet too. The place was run down looking. It appears to be like a little hole in the wall, without hole in the wall prices. Although my 2 rolls weren't too terrible, I don't think they were worth $22. I think I'll give other sushi places a try before coming back here. And if this is as good as it gets in Santa Barbara then I'll just wait till I'm in NorCal where I can get much better sushi for the same price.

Ladies and Gentleman, I may be a rookie yelper but i'm a experienced sushi enthusiast, and Edomasa is the best of the best... hands down. I would call it a hidden gem with excellent sushi only to be complimented by there service. I would recommend the Buffalo Volcano Roll, Santa Barbara Roll and the Baltimore roll. They also have a Chicken and Beef teriyaki bowl that's second to none

Had the delux buffalo volcano roll and I can safely say that was the most disgusting roll I've ever had. It was like a mouth full of hot mayo yuck!!!

This place has decent sushi but it is a bit on the pricey side. The first thing to take note is that their rolls are normal roll prices ranging from 8-14 dollars but they only give you 5 pieces oppose to the normal 8 pieces, a bit disappointing. What did save this place is the oyko-don rice bowl for $8.95 . The bowl was quite generous and very delicious! I would definitely come back just for this bowl! The food break down: De la vine roll: its tempora yellow tail with shrimp. It was good had a nice crunch to it and the shrimp complimented the salmon but was only 5 pieces...--$11.95 Godzilla roll: marinated tuna and yellow tail. This roll was different never had a roll like thi before the marinated tuna and yellow tail had a sort peppery taste.. It was good but yah 5 pieces .. If i had to choose i think de la vine roll is better , this roll is a sort of acquired taste -- $8.95 Oyako don rice bowl: DELICIOUS!! Definitely recommonded this not only is the bowl pretty big, they give you a generous amount of rice and egg, chicken proportion an the rice is not dry it has the special sauce.. YUMM:) --$8.95 Green tea tempora ice cream: pretty decent ball and it was good js like any other green tea ice tempora ! Only compliant too much whip cream but if thats what you like then gopd for you :) --$5.95 Overall, decent our bill came out to $38 for 2 people.. I js really wish their rolls were more generous.. I will probably be back when i come back to sb:)

My buddy suggested coming here for dinner. The last time I came here was several years ago when I was studying for my Masters @ UCSB. The host asked us twice how many people we had in our party...maybe low IQ? Asparagus Beef - My buddy highly recommended it and it was super tasty! - Asparagus was super young and tasty! :D - Beef was perfectly cooked w/ a nice teriyaki sauce My buddy and I ordered a bunch of rolls: Eel & Cucumber, Spicy Tuna, Hip Hop, and Spider. They all came out pretty good, although my buddy noted that he was unable to locate the salmon that was supposed to be included inside the Hip Hop roll... One interesting point that I noticed was that the seaweed was wrapped outside, as opposed to rice being on the outside at most NorCal sushi joints. My soup and salad were decent as well, although the salad could have used less dressing...

Get the Soft Shell Crab! The special roll menu is abundant, it's a little dark inside though but I like the atmosphere. They take reservations, the place usually seems to be busy. Probably my favorite sushi place in SB (and I have the sushi sensei badge, so I'm pretty trust worthy yeah?)

I come here at least once a month and always receive great service and food always comes out quickly. Philly roll, marina roll, and buffalo volcano rolls are all amazing. Staff is sweet and acknowledging. I think you get 10% off with axxess card as well.

    (4)
  • Raul E.

This place is very good, especially for the price and what time they stay open, the only thing that kind of ruined the experience is that they don't take the axxess on to go orders. I know that a lot of places do that but I just don't see the logic. If I eat there I'm not likely to spend more money than if I take out. In fact it deterred me from buying food there.

  • Baby C.

Their fish isn't that fresh tasting but it's Santa Barbara. I've found sushi here in town to be over sauced and previously frozen tasting. But Edomasa is much better than others. I love that they are open late on weekends and accept the Santa Barbara axxess card for 10% off the bill EVERYTIME we visit. Which is as often as possible. Their service is awesome and it's one of the only places I don't mind waiting for a table.

Edomasa may not be a sushi poser, but they made a fundamental mistake. I made a reservation for six. They have a policy that parties of six or more will be charged 15% tip. Also, they do not provide separate checks. My party of six turned out to be a party of five; so they did not add the tip. That wouldn't have been a problem since their service was great. Everyone was super friendly and none of our drinks got too low. Also, they accommodated each of us paying with either credit card or cash. Though you get a lot of food if you order one of the sushi combinations, I wasn't interested in getting California rolls or their choice of nigiri. I ordered hamachi, saba and unagi. I also ordered agedashi tofu. When they brought the nigiri, I noticed that they didn't have saba on the plate. I reminded the waitress that I ordered saba. She said, "Yes, that's Spanish mackerel." I didn't have the heart to argue with her that Spanish mackerel is called aji, not saba. Either way, I knew I said "saba"; so either the waitress entered the wrong information or the sushi chef doesn't know the difference between saba and aji. The nigiri was good, but I wasn't wowed by the quality. The agedashi tofu was decent. In the end, I had less food but a larger bill ($25) than my table mates. So, either you can pay a lot for what you want or pay less for their combinations. I wouldn't resist a return visit; however I would want to try a roll or their donburi and try to keep my bill well under $20!

There are definitely other sushi spots in town that have better sushi but by far Edomasa has the best spicy edamame around. If you like spicy foods and/or edamame you definitely need to try it here, it is amazing.

Soft shell crab. So good! Unfiltered sake. So good! I was very very pleasantly surprised with this place... Will definitely return! I also had the spider roll and tokyo roll...both very good as well. This place is open late which is nice, and does take out as well. And they take Axxess so dont forget your card!

A friend and I came to eat here as a sort of last resort. They were the only sushi bar we could find in SB that closed as late as 1am. My friend ordered the Santa Barbara roll, which came out to be extremely salty for some reason. She didn't even finish it. I think I ordered the sukiyaki don, which was meh. The beef was really dry and bland. I probably could have ordered a better beef bowl at Yoshinoya. Needless to say, my friend and I were pretty disappointed for the night.

Buffalo volcano roll, Baltimore, and Santa Barbara Roll, and they're albacore is as good as it gets.. I've been coming here for years, and by far the best Sushi Place in Santa Barbara, possibly even in the 805 area. Service is great; very attentive and and honest about their recommendations. Sometimes you'll be greeted by the owner himself, and hes usually back there doing work behind the sushi bar. All in all, a great vibe, great service, and most importantly, amazing food, you will NOT be disappointed.

  • Danah W.

Edomasa serves up some simple sushi in a casual dining atmosphere. It's great for late night sushi cravings! My favorite roll is the Santa Barbara Roll, tempura shrimp, crab, avocado and asparagus wrapped in colorful rice paper. Pretty tasty! The wait staff could definitely use some improvement as the waitresses tend to be slow, slow, slow. I sit at the sushi bar to curb this as much as possible. It's nothing fancy but if you're in the mood for some straight forward sushi eats, Edomasa is a good bet.

I went here in October while visiting Santa Barbara. The food was so good we decided to go here for a second time instead of getting dinner in town or on the pier. The place is open late, the food is good and not too pricey, and the waitresses were great both times we went. I highly recommend Edomasa.

I second Ian in that I am also not sure why some of these ratings are so low. I go to Edomasa at least a few times a month. They are one of the only Santa Barbara dinner options open really late each night. The service is good, prices are decent and it's a nice atmosphere. It's not that the ambience is super fancy and cool but there are always people there -- it's lively and feels comfortable, full of the sounds of happy conversation. I recommend their yellow tail, salmon entree, pork ramen, spicy edamame and burdock appetizer. Also, their entrees are usually very large portions, especially their dinner specials. And their pickled ginger is delicious.

I initially gave this place a 4 star review because of the delicious food at good prices, despite the drab service. I didn't even bother to mention it because I did not want to tarnish their image as I enjoy the food immensely. However, the last time I went there with a group a friends, service was beyond deplorable. Our waiter (blonde, ponytailed sourpuss that he always seems to be) was hardly around. The water boy checked on us more frequently than he did. After our meal, we sat around for a good 30 minutes before having to flag someone down for the check and then were told that our waiter went on break. We were a table of eight and had our bill split in two but gratuity was automatically added anyway. Generally this would not be an issue, but service was so bad we wanted to leave an equivalent tip. A member of our party spoke to the manager to request the gratuity be subtracted from our bill only to get into a long, heated debate with him. Finally, he reluctantly edited the bill and threatened to charge us double tip if he ever saw us there again. I'm knocking off a star from my original review because of the consistent shoddy service and rude management, but I simply cannot ignore my body calling for those Flower Rolls. We just have to throw on our wigs and fake noses to not get charged double tip. Take that sukka, and I'll take another Flower Roll!

There are definitely better places, and this one was probably a one time deal for my boyfriend and I. After hearing rave reviews from a friend and loyal customer of Edomasa, I rushed over to get a glimpse of a new place with amazing sushi. It disappointed me. The sushi was... acceptable and mildly enjoyable but nothing compared to Tomodachi (Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks), I Love Sushi (Ventura) or Shiki in LA. So there's the bottom line: there are much better places. To add, customer service was hardly existent. I don't have particularly high expectations and it takes a bit to disappoint me, so to have every employee with a melancholy, lack luster expression on their faces to match their attitude was just too much. I kept thanking the waitress and sushi chef (we sat at the bar), however all we ever received in return was a frown or blank expression. Upon leaving I gave a proper thanks, palms on my thighs, bowed and spoke the little Japanese I know, to perhaps let them know I know that their behavior not only is rude and distasteful here in the states but would be appalling in Japan. I genuinely hope they improve because they have potential. If you're craving amazing sushi and customer service, go to any of the places I mentioned!

This place was recommended to my dining partner by several people and I can see why. We tried a sampler that gave us 7 pieces of sushi with a spicy tuna roll, the Spider Roll, and the Flower Roll. The sushi pieces were pretty big. We cut them in half so that we could try everything. The spicy tuna roll was nice and fresh, while the spider roll had a good crunch. The Flower Roll was mediocre. Although it had eel, asparagus, avocado and crab, I mainly tasted the eel sauce and the rice. I will not get that one again. The service was pretty awesome. It's the best service I've had at a sushi place, probably ever! Looking forward to going back and trying other items.

Good food. Good prices. Open late. Lots of tables so you don't have to wait forever to eat!

Edomasa is a great place for sushi in SB. The atmosphere of the restaurant is like any other sushi joint, simple and vibrant. The sushi and rolls here are excellent. Everything has that 'fresh' taste to it and the prices are decent. This place is a must try if you are in the area. Recommendation: Santa Barbara Roll

This place is great for those wanting sushi on a tight budget, while not sacrificing the quality of the food. They won't split the check for you so try and have cash if you're in a big group.

Above average quality of sashimi with fair prices. There is good variety on their menu ( you can download it on their website.) Also, if you love soft shell crab, definitely try it here! They do a wonderful job of frying it with light batter and the dipping sauce with ground ginger and green onion is a great compliment for it.

Excellent Santa Barbara Sushi. We highly recommend Edomasa! Don't take the 4 stars the wrong way. I reserve 5 stars for places that completely blow my mind.

The food is good. The service is not bad. This has for a long time been one of my favorite restaurants because its open late and the sushi is a really good value. With that said, this review is specifically to address the attitude and lame excuse I got when I complained about the prices not being the same as they are advertised on their website. Not only is false advertising wrong and illegal, it is the one thing that will make your customers seriously lose faith in your integrity. That is the last thing you want as a business. Additionally, to make excuses when confronted about this issue rather than accepting my complaint, apologizing, and offering the difference back makes it even worse. Furthermore, If your excuse is that your website has been outdated since the earthquake in Japan and you just haven't gotten a chance to change it... you do realize that you have been misleading people for more than a year and a half, right? In that time, how many people do you think have been similarly misguided and not said anything? How many bad opinions do you think you have caused? And for what... a change that would take less than two hours to make even if you decided to update your entire menu? Ultimately, as it is in your best interest to advertise lower rates to get more people into your restaurant and ordering take out, I believe it's important to make this change sooner than later now that it has clearly been brought to your attention here on yelp. I assure you Im not trying to be a bully in any way... I'm just passionate about honesty. Update your website that is deceiving anyone that visits it, and Ill be more than happy to remove this review and give you a higher star rating.

Dropped into SB for an overnight stay and got in the mood for sushi. Edomasa was one of the few places that was open late, and it came with some good recommendations, so we stopped in for a late-night dinner. We usually sit at the sushi bar so that we can talk with the chef and watch him prepare the meal. As luck would have it, two seats opened up at the bar when we arrived. So, we slid right in. We started with some unfiltered sake and then tried some fatty tuna sushi to whet the appetite. This was followed by the sushi boat - which was more than we expected for the $35 price tag. The food was good, the service was quick, and we had a good time. Surprisingly, the place was still full at 10:00 PM - and this on a Tuesday night. Parking can be tricky, and you'll likely have to wait for a table if you come during normal eating times. Other than that, it was worth the trip. We'll be back.

There is something incredibly special about Edomasa. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the waitstaff is very nice. The chef's at the bar are wonderful and great at their craft. I love sitting in the far right corner of the bar for hours, dinning on tasty rolls and sashimi. I could literally spend an evening there just enjoying my guest and the amazing sushi that Edomasa has to offer. Its also great for big groups. The sushi comes out quickly and is beautifully prepared. I've been to every sushi place in Santa Barbara, and none keep me coming back like Edomasa. See you there!

Sitting at the bar was great! The chefs were so friendly and personable. Sushi was excellent!!! And it's late closing time is super convenient. The fish quality was great. The vegetable BOWL was huge and OK - obviously not what they specialize in. SUSHI - YES! HOSPITALITY - YES!

  • Mark F.

Cheap and easy. That's what you get with Edomasa. Walk in to a small and simply decorated, wrap around dinning room and the first thing you may notice is the lack of Caucasian. That's a huge point in my book. Would you eat Mexican food in a place with no Latinos? I think not. The food is good quality, the service friendly and fast but the best part of Edomasa is the price. Here you're not paying for crazy plates decorated with drizzles of sauce. Fish. Fresh fish. There are better sushi bars to take a date but after a couple bring um here and keep the cash in your pocket.

Don't waste your time. Okay customer service. Rolls were dry. Crab was way overcooked and looked like chicken. The female sever agreed. The fish on the rainbow roll appeared to have a faded look. The highlight was the Soju cocktail with some kind of tropical juice. Yummy!

Just went a few weeks ago....STILL amazing quality! My mom tried the spicy tuna roll and noted that it didn't look all fake and neon like the kind she gets near her work. Now she says she can't go back to that other crap! The albacore was still absolutely to die for! My mom thought the prices weren't so bad either

I live in LA and this place is one of the best sushi spots in the SB area. Been eating here for.. oh.. 15 years. Its easily worth the drive even from LA for the scenery and to enjoy the town. The food has always been fresh, I like the ambiance, not too extreme either way. The fish has always been fresh, presented well, no funny smell and rolls garnished well, but not too heavy. A personal favorite is their eggplant miso yaki.

  • David S.

Lots of students from the college come here. Food is good, but they are not really accommodating such as splitting a bill with people at the same table. They also "nickel and dime" you for extra eel sauce. I've been here twice and like the food and will return again.

My girlfriend and I had a great time at Edomasa's sushi bar just recently. This Santa Barbara staple is one of the town's only late night options. The prices aren't bad either. We first tried the Godzilla roll. The vinegary, garlicky marinated tuna was unlike any kind of roll I've ever tried. Between good laughs an hot miso, we joined one of the servers for a few drinks. She taught us all about Shochu; a Japanese vodka distilled from grain or potatoes. Helps promote longevity. I guess it's like Europeans and their daily glass of red wine. Perhaps just another reason to get drunk.. I was lucky enough to get the last Yellowtail Kama in the joint. That and some hot rice put a nice finish to the night.

I've been going to Edomasa for ten years, discovered it when I used to live right around the corner. It's still my fav spot in SB because the quality and price are good. And yes, if you hit it on a Friday or Sat eve at prime time dinner hour, you can expect a wait. I've never had the issue of bad "fishy" sushi here, and remember one time a friend didn't touch her salmon rolls because she was stuffed and the waitress was concerned if there was something wrong. I like the different set deals (Lady's Set) and agedashi tofu appetizer. The katsu don is good and I like their tempura udon. It is kind of a dive-y spot but my friends from Bay Area and LA love the food there--and these are guys who can get the best. I just had to add that because seems like there are some snobs from those areas reviewing this place :-p ... I'd nick off maybe half a star for the unfriendly owner or host but just ignore him--he's that way to everyone. In general I've found the service to be friendly and quick.

Santa Barbara is a puzzling sushi wasteland. I mean, here are wealthy people who abide by the sea. Where is the good sushi? Anyhow, I shudder to think how I stomached this place. I used to drink heavy, and this place was open late so we'd hit it up. Once I tried it sober I realized what I was ingesting. It's a dried up rice, slimy fish abyss! Their albacore is brown, their scallops are bay scallops. Their cuts are all kinds of wrong. Their chefs are not even Japanese. Maybe this is a fancy roll type place for non sushi and sashimi eaters. But even those were no bueno. The high ratings are from people who don't visit Little Tokyo, Ventura Blvd or the Westside. If you're wasted and starving and have a strong stomach feel free to eat here.

It's difficult when moving to a new place to get that satisfied "know where" feeling when it comes to Japanese and other Asian cuisine. Santa Barbara makes it real tough but it could be worse I suppose. We came to Edomasa to hopefully find a sushiya with a strict passion for fish freshness and high grade rice. We sat at the bar and the service was pretty darn good. The agari was strong which was welcomed, I hate weak tea. The rice, too, was good and surprisingly high grade. They had a whiteboard with the specials; these things are always comprised of two things - first ins and last outs. Do yourself a favor and ask your chef which fish he recommends and what single fish was the most recently acquired. This is how to get to the good fish. Anyways we did that, and explored a little more on our own. The toro was definitely not toro, more like regular maguro. Seared cajun maguro was old and lifeless. I could tell the hotate (scallop) was pre-frozen, so I steered clear of the amaebi (sweet shrimp). The hirame (halibut) was on the board and was fresh and tasty. The uni was so so, medium grade at best - not sure why someone would want a whole box of it at that quality, although $17 isn't bad. The ankimo was missing something too, not bad but didn't have an overwhelmingly fresh tinglying too it like it should. All in all I wouldn't really come here for nigiri/sashimi. To finish up we had the chef whip us up two unagi temaki (eel handrolls) which were really yummy. After coming to Edomasa I've realized that it looks more enjoyable if used as an izakaya instead of sushiya. There were whiteboards all around the place with izakaya-like homestyle small plates. I'm going to come back to give a review from that standpoint. I want to test some kama anyways. Edomasa is a 2/5 for sushi at best, but looks promising for small plates and drinks - the price is definitely right.

Edomasa is the my favorite Sushi around. The service is fantastic. They are just so sweet here and yeah they have screwed up a busy times but they still know how to make you feel happy. The Sushi and the Enoki mushroom appetizer is OFF THE HOOK! They are the only ones in SB to have a real Japanese menu, like some crazy stuff that I am still afraid to try lol. I live in Carpinteria and will drive to Edomasa for my sushi fix (about 15 minutes). They never disappoint me and my kids after eating here about 20 times and are open crazy late...till midnight I think. We love you Edomasa!!

I'm a huge fan of my neighborhood sushi joint, they have a lot to offer on the menu and it's all pretty damn tasty. The people who work there are pretty speedy and attentive too, much appreciated on that. My favorite roll from here is the Buffalo Volcano Roll, I always order it. The fact that they have late night hours too works well for them, a late night roll is always a good decision. I will always bring my family and friends here.

Edomasa is sometimes good but mostly ranging from average to terrible. We eat sushi weekly and try to go to all SB sushi places on a regular basis. We stopped going to Edomasa however due to the high prices. This was our first time back there in 12 months. This time (Monday, 26 Nov 2012) at Edomasa was the worst sushi I have ever had. It may have been because it was Monday because the fish was not fresh, but that was not all. The rolls were overstuffed with rice (very little fish), and simply terrible tasting. The worst were the rolls: godzilla, hip-hop, marina. The only thing that was edible were the uni shooters with quail. The bill was outrageously , over $75 for two adults and no alcohol, and would have been expensive even for good sushi.

I didn't spend my college years in this town, so I was never exposed to Edomasa as reasonable cheap Japanese eats until recently. As recently as last night, in fact. We took advantage of what Edomasa offers over other sushi joints in town - the late service hours. I was immediately drawn to the salmon kama - oh, to dig into that collar for the tender meat, it's a treasure hunt I never grow bored of. Also on order was oysters on the half shell. Fat and juicy, dressed with finely sliced spring onions and a thin sauce, it slips in your mouth like that was its destiny. Three generous oysters for just under $6. The new roll for me was the buffalo volcano roll, recommended by a dining companion. It's a California roll sliced and laid out flat, then spread with a spicy cream cheese and flashed under the broiler so it's hot and golden. This is a very rich roll, definitely one to share round the table. Prices were reasonable, in fact, I'm looking at my bill now and am scratching my head a bit. I think I got undercharged. The ambience is still trending towards the younger crowd of 20-somethings. And I have to admit, the interior caught me off guard - it's not very intimate and cozy feeling. The floors were a hard, cold concrete and I felt a little like I'd walked into a school gymnasium with Japanese-looking accoutrements temporarily decorating it. But if the clientele is primarily dorm kids, or ex-college hangers-on, I suspect this detail is easily overlooked in lieu of those happy happy memories of substantial late night sushi.

Used to eat here a lot years ago and gave it a shot again tonight. It was easily the worst sushi I have ever had. I have eaten sushi all over the world, including Tijuana. The sushi we had tonight was worse than Tijuana. The sushi was stale and nearly tasteless. The rolls were loaded with so much rice that I could not taste the fish. The only thing tolerable were the uni shooters. The terrible sushi included marina roll, Godzilla roll, and the hip hop roll. And, the meal cost $75! Way too much for such a bad meal.

I enjoy this place for the mere fact that it is opened so late. If you ever had a late night sushi craving then this is the place for you. Tons of students tend to flock here. I never had a bad experience, or have had friends with bad experiences. This place also gets very busy, so you might have to wait a bit. The parking can be a bit of a hassle though. If you plan on getting a side salad, its nice really a side salad, its massive! Fair warning. The tokyo roll, rainbow roll are very good choices. And you really almost rarely go wrong with the rainbow roll anywhere. Sashimi is nice and fresh, good edamame, miso soup, the beef bowl is very good and a good portion as well.... they have so many good things and SOOOO many choices its crazy. The prices vary from 8-20 something. I feel something afforable for everyone.

I feel like I shouldn't be allowed to write a review for Edomasa because I only order one menu item, ever. But that's because it's the best menu item, and I wouldn't be the same person had I never enjoyed it. So, will get right to it. Here's what I do: -Sit at the bar. It's fun, and the sushi chefs are friendly. -Order an iced tea. They're big. And yummy. -What if that had been the "one menu item" i'd referred to? -Order the Buffalo Volcano Roll. This is a California roll that has been baked with spicy cream on top. Yep, that exists. -Complete your meal with the red bean ice cream that they drench in plum wine. Yep, also exists. -Toothpick! Kthanxbai!

We've been to a few sushi restaurants in town including Kai, Arigato, and Sushi Teri. Edomasa is our fav. The prices are reasonable and the service is awesome. Everyone is always so friendly. My fav roll is the Godzilla Roll. I love the garlicky flavor. Yum! The Buffalo Volcano roll is a bit much with all the cream cheese. The Santa Barbara roll is probably my second favorite. My husband isn't a huge fan of sushi restaurants. However, he does love the dinner special. It's a steal and it's delicious. He gets it with chicken teriyaki. Along with the chicken teriyaki, there is miso soup, salad, California roll, tempura (veg and shrimp), and mochi. Unlike other places in town, the tea is complimentary like restaurants in the Bay area. I highly recommend Edomasa, especially if you want sushi on a budget.

Good food, a little steep in price, but that's not unusual for decent sushi. I had a combination dinner, and some rolls. The only reason I'm not giving this pace five stars us because the service wasn't great. The waiter was friendly, but we had to check out at the host stand which was lame, and we also waited a while to get our drinks.

Life is too short to not enjoy it to the fullest. These days I've been just trying to keep my mind clear and my heart open. I need times like these to keep me grounded so that I don't get overstressed by life. I needed a day like this so that I'm balanced and I can reset, recharge the batteries. Let it all out and not worry about what ails me. Let the negativity from the weeks and months melt away. Eat..drink..laugh..with good company. But only for a short time... My trip to Santa Barbara ended with a dinner at Edomasa. By the time we were done at Bridlewood Estate, I was quite tipsy. I'm a happy and silly drunk so this has the makings of an interesting and loud time. We arrive 6PM on the dot which is their opening time. There were already about 6 people waiting for the restaurant to open. A good sign... This restaurant was pumped up all week by a friend of mine and it delivered. The place is easily missed. It is located on a small avenue and is small itself. There is nothing special about the exterior or the interior but that never distracts me from the quality of food. The order included yellow tail sashimi, albacore sashimi, spicy tuna roll, and yellow tail tuna collar dinner. Don't forget the cold sake which contributed to my headache and subsequent dehydration. The tuna collar dinner included a sweet and sour cucumber salad, miso salad, and one piece of mochi ice cream. The yellow tail sashimi was excellent quality. It was very fresh, tender, and flavorful. The albacore lightly grilled in the outside so it had light chewy texture but ultra tender in the inside, this too melted in your mouth. I had to try the yellow tail collar to compare to Teru sushi. The collar here was larger because it includes a section of the body behind the collar. It looked beautiful on my plate. It looked like it was baked not grilled. The outside was almost crispy and the meat cooked well. It was a tad dryer than expected but tasted good. The skin was much different being baked not grilled. I like the grilled skin much better and skipped some parts of the skin. The plate includes ponzu sauce which was sour and tasted great with the tuna. All in all the night was filled with laughter and stories. Shared moments that became stories. Great food, great company, great atmosphere, great service, and cool patrons. When we left the restaurant, it was completely full and there were at least another 8 people waiting to eat here. Have you ever had a day where you just didn't want to end? This was one of those days for me.

I ABSOLUTELY love the spicy tuna roll. I've been on a hunt for similar spicy tuna rolls since i've left SB, and have not found anything as good as this place. The only reason why they lose a star is because they use the yucky tap water for their tea. I love that the hours are so late.

de la vina roll: crunchy yet soft. good as an appetizer for two maybe even for one person since there's only 5 rolls. it's topped with caviar :D japanese mackerel: good but can't compare to my mom's non japanese mackerel xD spanish style mackerel (raw): it was kind of bland sashimi:different raw fishes like salmon and tuna. delicious but squid was way too chewy. green tea mochi: loved it! =$120ish; kind of pricey but it's the best sushi place I've been to in SB 4 stars because I was craving seafood, there's free parking, mochi came with the sashimi, and because it was my friend's treat :D

I visited Santa Barbara again this weekend and decided to go back to this restaurant because I remembered it as being affordable and yummy when I was still an undergrad. It did not disappoint! The food was still delicious and plentiful for a Japanese restaurant, and the price was still friendly to the wallet for the budget conscious. I ordered the vegetable udon and the special dinner menu with a bowl of edamame as appetizer, and everything plus tip and tax came out to be under $30! YAAAY!

Edomasa never disappoints! Open late for those late night Edomasa cravings! Love the Baltimore roll (absolutely my favorite) but when I'm craving something on the lighter side, the spicy tuna roll is fantastic. Best Spicy Tuna roll I've had in town. California roll, no roe add asparagus, yum! Edomasa gets my vote!

This is the best sushi in town. I recommend getting the spicy edamame and the Santa Barbara roll. Prices here are reasonable for the quality of food you are getting and they accept the Santa Barbara Axxess card which will save you 10 percent everytime.

After living in SB for 5 years and counting, Edomasa is still one of my favorite places to get well-priced sushi and satisfaction at hours when everything else is closed. Their fish is usually fresh and their chefs at the bar are usually very courteous and attentive. Table service is usually not too bad either, friendly even if a little distracted at times. My favorites are the Baltimore Roll, Shrimp Curry Rice, and De La Vina Roll. Sushi snobs may give this place a slightly lower rating, but for SB its one of the better places for experience and taste.

0 stars!! First time I went I loved it. So this weekend I took my out of state family visitors there. Starting with the owner or manager. A tall guy that looked so miserable being there. The most arrogant and disdainful attitude ever. I watched him as he took people's bills and returned their change. Not a smile or thank u. But he was on his chefs though. He would constantly go look over their shoulders. The chefs looked miserable. The food/sushi was just so blah!! What a disappointment.

I eat here very often. REALLLLY extensive menu; for a while I was going to try to eat everything on it, but there are so many AMAZING things on the menu that I can't even bring myself to branch out. I recommend... 1. Yellowtail kama dinner- perfectly seasoned broiled fish, sunomono, miso, rice and a mochi. My ideal meal. I could eat this 3 times a day for the rest of my life. 2. Steamed clam- Sounds like it's not much, huh? It's on the appetizer list. It's a bowl of a tasty broth with like 20-30 tiny clams in their shells in it. Order some rice with it and it's a meal. 3. Oshinko AND Takuan/Kinpira set- JAPANESE PICKLES. If you love pickles, you have to try these. 4. Mitsumame- It's a fruit cocktail with yummy little gelatin cubes in it! 5. Sukiyaki- Massive bowl of glass noodles, soft perfect tofu the likes of which you'll never find in any store, and nappa cabbage. Comes with a bunch of mystery 'tools' that will perplex any westerner. My boyfriend gets all the rolls, which aren't really my thing, but they're wonderful too. Edomasa is open late, the staff is friendly, and the menu's got something for everyone. My only main gripe is how the food comes to your table. Everything arrives when it's freshly made (cool), but some things take longer to make... so they take longer to get to you. Rolls and sushi come out fast, but udon or kama or sukiyaki can take forever. These are my favorite items, and I'll often not order them because my roll-snarfing boyfriend is always completely done eating by the time my food arrives.

The sushi here is pretty good. I always get the spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail or any of the speciality rolls when I come here. I wouldn't suggest the salmon roe though... I've had it a few times here and its always been a disappointment. The other sushi items are all pretty good. Every time I come here I have to get the tempura ramen. Something about those tempura flakes and veggies in the ramen. I would give them a 4 but I really do get disappointed about the salmon roe (my absolute favorite). Oh and a plus is that they are open pretty late.

First off the Sushi snob one star reviews need to GTFO. If your only idea of an acceptable sushi joint is where chef Morimoto him self is serving you then don't write 1 star reviews. This is a long standing establishment that for me has always delivered. Been all over the country and Edomasa is still one of my favorites, not just for the food but also for the people. Always helpful and willing to adjust their menu for vegetarians and other special diets. Worth a visit if you're in SB.

I agree w/Kara C. Please patronize this place if "so-so" is your thing. I didn't sit at the sushi bar so maybe I missed out, but I feel that if sitting at the bar is the only way to receive decent service then they should extend the bar all the way to State St. Apart from that happening, I will leave Edomasa to the dubious Yelp reviewers.

We strolled in at midnight and still received friendly service and highly palatable, fresh sushi. It's not exceptional, but fine for a late night meal if you're in the neighborhood. We weren't, but drove over anyway. Nice selection of sake and the place is cozy, not pretentious by any means.

"Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Was taken here as a surprise. By someone who doesn't eat sushi. So I was a little nervous. But this place was grrrrrreat! Thanks Yelp! The man, whom I presume, to be the owner, is awesome, a charmer! Sit at the bar. Always. Eating at the bar always adds to the experience of eating sushi. The sushi was great, especially for the price. I've been to a lot of sushi places, and in this price range, it's hit or miss with the quality of the fish. No gross white markings or discoloration, no "fishy" taste/smell. Just quality stuff. I had salmon, yellowtail, and white fish tuna plus a spicy tuna handroll to top it off. My partner in crime, and I, come to Santa Barbara often, and I will be sure to frequent this great sushi restaurant. Cannot wait to go back and try the freshwater eel, albacore, and 'masago' with quail egg.

I loved this sushi joint during my undergrad at SB..... I hadn't visited in years but went back this past weekend when I was in town and I remembered why I loved them: BUFFALLO VOLCANO roll is the BOMB, BOMB!!!! Santa Barbara Roll also the BOMB (but not BOMB, BOMB) Spicy Tuna & Hip Hop Roll: ehhhhhh, not sooooo much!!!! miso soup is on point.... Definitely will come back every time I'm in SB for the Buffalo Volcano roll... YUMMMO ;-P!

3.5 stars I've been craving for their hand rolls so we came in for dinner. Edomasa's menu is really extensive so everything look appetizing. I went with the sushi and sashimi combo- 4 pieces of spicy tuna, tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, salmon nigiri, and tuna, red snapper, and albacore sashimi. It was a lot of food but I felt that the sashimi was just not as fresh today. It felt a little off. Slightly disappointed.

This is by far my favorite sushi place in Santa Barbara. They have the BEST crunchy roll in all of California, I swear. Despite the buffalo volcano roll being way too greasy and loaded with cream cheese (which doesn't belong on sushi anyway), this place is decent because everything else on the menu is a win. Service is speedy and friendly. Did I mention their crunchy roll?

My wife and I's goto Sushi place in Santa Barbara. Great prices, great atmosphere. They have some great combo deals.... and I recommend washing it down with a Saporro or hot saki.

This is a great restaurant to know about. The other fans have it right--great late night sushi. And the tee shirts are cool to sport if you are a fan. One great appetizer to order that will surprise you with its deliciousness is the EGGPLANT MISO YAKI. It's a like a succulent eggplant donut. The sauce on it is incredible. I've ordered it at dinner with folks who are not even eggplant fans and they almost fall over in their chairs over how good it is. Don't die wondering--give it a try!!

Edomasa is definitely the most traditional sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara. That said, the sushi is just okay - fish doesn't seem as fresh as some other places in town. The bento boxes and other Japanese fare are very tasty with huge portions. Overall, I'm a fan of Edomasa, just not for the sushi.

This is the most reasonably priced sushi in Santa Barbara and it's right on De La Vina. I think a set of 6 futomaki rolls is ~3.75$ or 4$.They have all the usual rolls, spider rolls, volcano, caterpillar, teryaki, miso, sashimi etc. My favorite part is that they are open late. Most places are closed by 9pm and I believe they stay open until around midnight.

A friend decided to take me and a couple of my buddies to this restaurant because it was one of the few restaurants that is opened late in the area. I'm not sure what to think of this place, it's small but not too small. The service here is not bad either. Food I would say is passable.

This place is worthy of a try! I do not like sushi at all, but they have a wide variety of non-sushi dishes. I have tried many of their rice bowls and other meals, and I am always satisfied and leave with plenty of left-overs for the next day (and I am NOT a light eater!) Prices are fair, and the employees are friendly and responsive. Plus, this is one of the few eateries in the Upper State/San Roque area which is open late!

First I have to say that I come from Hawaii and I have been missing some good Japanese food not just Sushi/sashimi. Let me get my criticism out of the way the sashimi/sushi was cut way to thick BUT frickin yum it was (we eat poke so no worries we like chunks of raw fish with shoyu, yeah baby) Other then that the service was really good the young woman taking care of us was patient and went with the flow of our table where we were ordering one thing at a time and laughing our butts off (we work together), The Unagai was delish and the fish was really fresh, we had one of the sushi/sashimi platters and some rolls, really good quality. And they have Asahi beer on tap, wow, really tasty. And the Miso soup was spot on. This place ranks up there for unpretentious Japanese food. I loved the setting reminds me of a place called Irifune's in Honolulu, but that's another review. Oh and they are open till MN.

I used to work here while I was in college. The food was pretty tasty but I didn't like sushi back then. I only started enjoying it when I lived in Kyoto. I definitely would go back to give it another whirl. I had bakes mussels for the first time here and they were out of this world!

No atmosphere, non-pretentious, not bad. Great prices, good sushi, good sake. You can order "non-americanized" sushi as well. Ahem, that means no mayo and no cream cheese and no crab with a K. And you don't have to break out a brand new outfit as you would for ARIGATO on State. I love to go here with my man...good times.

Truthfully, I was a little tired at this point and we already had an early dinner at a ho-hum little place in SLO before we got here. I wasn't too hungry and just had the vegetable udon, which I wasn't expecting much from, but it was surprisingly good!

Why do I go to Edomasa? Well...because I won't be a true "Santa Barbarian" if I don't. I am sure other locals would agree. The best thing about this place...well, you can eat good sushi without burning a whole in your wallet. Why is there 1 star missing in this review - it's not Arigato where everything is fancy and pretty. This is like your good ole' Honda civic - reliable, stable, economical. The food: The menu is pretty big so even if you don't eat raw fish, you have a lot to choose from. I LOVE the Godzilla roll - a roll wrapped with tuna and yellowtail that are marinated in olive oil and garlic. Pretty unique. Volcano roll - decadent and good for the no-raw fish folks. Something hot? Katsu don - fried pork chops, eggs, over rice...that should keep you pretty happy if you've been starving all day. The service: Mihoe, Taka, Tai, Sato...I know them all. Good people, big smiles. They get busy so don't expect service like you're at some 5 star restaurant but they'll take care of you. Oh...yeah...like Mark D. I like the backdoor parking and that VIP feeling. The best things about this place - it's one of the few places in SB that opens late. They close at midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends. Eat Sushi...don't go to Taco Bell if you're hungry at 11pm!

  • Shoshanna L.

The sushi is very good, but the late-night hours are the really great thing about Edomasa. There aren't a lot of places open late in SB, and it's so much better to be here than to be at Denny's. Also, I think "Buffalo Volcano" is really funny. If you are ever in a bad mood, just think about the buffalo volcano and it will distract you from your problems. Is it a volcano shaped like a buffalo? Or is it a volcano that shoots buffalos out the top? I know what I think, but I won't tell you because it's important to form your own opinion.

I have only ever ordered one food item here, and that is the tempura udon with a ton of extra cha shu. I would say on a generation-based ranking system, the tempura and udon (noodles, broth AND veggies) are definitely your grandmother's tempura and udon. The cha shu, maybe just your mom's, but even that is pretty hard to come by what with all these mediocre noodle places popping up like mushrooms after a good rain. Anyway, I ate this dish too many times to count during my time at UCSB, and I thank Edomasa, and whoever supplies their noodles, wholeheartedly for giving me a little taste of home while I was away at school.

Really good for late night sushi but service kinda sucks sometimes. Tempura red bean ice cream, yellowtail sushi, seared yellowtail Kama( I love yellowtail) and seaweed salad are pretty good. And the price for rolls are good for sushi in Santa Barbara

after reading sushi / japanese reviews, i came across a santa barbara list and started to get all nostalgic...but no one had edomasa listed... so i am here to give my review on how it was when i was living there for the last 6 years... one of my friends roommates was a waitress there and i was often invited to eat in the after hours if i agreed to pick her up after i was done with the state st crawl... my experience echos as such... around 3am, when they are all closed up for the night, the owner and employees gather together to eat and drink, like family... ok, well the ones who speak japanese really stay... the owner sits there and drinks and drinks... his mannerisms sent me back into time... the rookie waiter had to fetch his food and whatever else he wanted...usually followed by a slap to the back of the head for being to slow, even though he wasnt.. it was just old traditional japanese ways... the food was prepared by 40 year old japanese hands only with the occasional apprentice to help on the side... the selection of sake is superb... i am going to say that what you will find here is nothing different than what you can find at any typical japanese restaurant, for what they do, it is well done... never a sloppy moment and always consistent... it was the traditions and comfort that make this place a joy to visit when ever i am in the SB area... although it gets busy at the prime times for dinner so be prepared to wait a tad...

i love curry and thought to try their curry donkastu the other night. #1, i ordered "Large" size, and from what i can tell, it plate is pretty large, but not so much for the food, and it easily could be the worse curry in this area. #2, the service. i checked comments on Santabarabara.com before i went there, hoping i would be lucky to get good service. but now i regret that i didnt LISTEN!!!!the service was worse than the curry, at first they forgot to take my order, and then later leave me waiting forever. the waitress just kept ignoring me, even when i was waiving at her. Please do yourself a favor and go to other Japanese restaurants.

Just came from Arigato Sushi and tried Edomasa on the recommendation from a fellow Yelper. For a better deal and better sushi this is the place (so far). It's only 5 minutes west of downtown and worth the trip. I went and got the sushi & sashimi combo for $3 less than Arigato and much better quality and quantity of food. Edomasa's combo came with nice slices of fish and came with rice, miso soup, veggie pickles, Daikon, ice cream mochi and good green tea. The fish was good quality and the overall meal was satisfying and delicious.

Edomasa is right around the corner from where I live, so I've been here many many times over the years. It's not the best sushi in town, but the food is ok, it's open late, and it's inexpensive.

Stopped by here on a visit to SB from SD for some sushi without all of the extra pretentious atmosphere and all that. We liked the low-key, chill atmosphere here a lot and really liked the prices considering the prices of most of the restaurants around here compared to SD. We came in and were seated. We could tell immediately that these would not be the most attentive servers as they seemed a little out of it. We browsed the menu and saw many things that we were interested in. As for the special rolls, most of them were either tempura fried or baked or had crab in them. We prefer cold, raw rolls, and don't care for crab salad (especially if it's Krab salad), so we don't risk it. We got the Hip Hop Roll ($5.95), my wife got the Philly ($5.75), and I got the seafood salad ($10.50) and a miso. The miso came out first and looked very cloudy and flavorful. However, somehow they managed to make this soup completely flavorless. Seriously, this tasted like hot water and we thanked the Lord that we did not order the Ramen because it would probably be the same. The rolls came out next and were very big as others have noted and were five pieces each. Yes they had more rice than a normal roll, but they also had more fish. However, I would still prefer more, smaller pieces because they are easier to eat. The Hip Hop roll had great flavor between the salmon and tuna and the avocado evened it all out very nicely. the Philly was a philly roll, if you've had one you've had em all...for the most part. Now, the salad was very good. it was a large sized salad with a very, very light sesame dressing, which really allowed the fish to shine. There was one large piece of each fish and it included salmon, hamachi, red snapper, tuna, seared ahi, shrimp and octopus. The octopus was pretty flavorless and tough, but not really rubbery. The shrimp was pretty unexciting. I don't tend to like snapper, but my wife and I enjoyed this piece. I've had more tender salmon, but this was pretty good, especially with regard to flavor. The tuna was also very good and had a great flavor. The seared ahi was the most tender piece of fish on the plate and literally melted in our mouths. it had a very subtle flavor, but was very good. And my favorite, the hamachi, was the star of the show with the best mix of amazing flavor, freshness, and tender, buttery-ness. Despite the pretty good food, the service was pretty weak. they dropped our soup off and took off without bringing a spoon and had to be chased down to request one as they walked past us ignoring our attempts get their attention. They never checked to see how we were doing and were difficult to get any acknowledgment from. Most of this was expected. What decisively knocked them down to three from three and a half stars was the sign that said a service charge of 5% would be added to all take-out orders. Talk about nickle-and-diming! More detailed review to come (eventually) on portarickinrick.blogspot… .

In my opinion, this is one of the best sushi places in the SB/Goleta area! It has the Japanese feel, and the fish is always fresh! It is the only sushi place that is open late, big plus! Great food :)

I tried this sushi restaurants back in 1997, and have been a fan since. Serving reasonably priced, great tasting sushi, I used to live a block away and walked over, whenever I was in the mood. It's a hidden gem that many can easily miss, especially because it doesn't seem like this would be an ideal location for a Japanese restaurant -- sandwiched between a Mexican bakery and Mimosa. Regardless, I certainly recommend it.

  • Junk C.

On my last visit, we sat around drinking a giant bottle of sake from their large selection until nearly 1 AM. Edomasa earns a few stars simply for being open so late, which beats most sushi bars around. Not only that, but they have a menu chock full of different stuff, including a good variety of specialty rolls, none better than the godzilla roll. Nigiri is spectacular as well.... the albacore was as delicious as anywhere, and the cajun tuna is superb, jam packed with flavor and suitable even for novices among the rest of you sushi connoisseurs. This is a great stop for sushi.

OK, thank God for yelp. We knew we wanted sushi, but we didn't want to mortgage our home for it and we didn't know where to go around here. We saw good reviews for Edomasa on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed. We did get there early and ended up having to park ourselves in the little neighborhood bar across the street (also a pretty cool place). Once they opened up for dinner, we were the first ones in the door and gorged ourselves. The service was fantastic, the sushi and rolls were amazing and the three of us ate and drank beer until we couldn't take anymore and still got out for under a hundred bucks. We are definitely going back. Thanks, Yelpers!

This is definitely a Japanese Restaurant. I have been coming here since I got a car at UC Santa Barbara. Hidden away from from tourist destination Downtown Santa Barbara and from most student's views, this place is difficult to get to without a car or knowledge of the place. I usually order a sushi and a large bowl of nabeyaki udon. Once in awhile I go big here with a Sashimi Deluxe meal. The price is right for what they are offering. It's actually decent compared to Kai's Sushi, which is highly marked up for what its worth! The only thing I have a problem is with splitting the check. I understand its hard and irritating, but just bare with it. I use the same register system at my waitering job and I split checks for my customers. Parking is going to be hard since its in the back of the restaurant. Though I'm not going to take any points off for the parking. Its not the restaurant's fault here. Give this place a shot and come in with an adventurous mind!

Went here tonight for the first time. It's nice how close it is to my place. I had the nabeyaki udon and also some hamachi sushi. the udon was good and not too salty. i'm not even thirsty right now! service was a bit slow, but I didn't mind since we were talking and not in a rush. it ended up being cheap too for all the appetizers we got too. i'm hopeful to try other things on the menu. oh and i can't wait to try their red bean ice cream. i never see that on menus anymore.

  • George T.

The only thing edomasa has going for it is the late hours. Sushi here is simply of unimpressive quality and over priced ($28 for 6 slices of fish on top of rice?). We ordered a roll which came cut crooked and uneven. A sushi "chef" is going to be satisfied serving a roll like that to a customer? This is the 2nd time we've been here, the first we only ordered appetizers which were quite good actually. Come here only for the gimmick of late night sushi. Otherwise go to Goleta Sushi House on hollister for quality.

Their combo plates are such a great deal. I loved their portions for the sashimi. The waiter was very cool about switching up my order. I can't wait to go back.

It is the only late night Sushi Bar in town. The price is absolutely reasonable for what you get. If you are a sushi snob, it's medium quality. If you just plain old love sushi or want to try it out- it's perfect. I suggest the Oysters in a Half shell. one order gets you three very delicious oysters. Watch out for their version of the Santa Barbara roll- its spicy.

    (4)
  • Darren S.

Definitely a good stop if you're in the mood for Japanese food. It's a very relaxed kind of hang out place to sit, talk, and eat relatively inexpensive Japanese food. Now the decor, mind you, isn't top of the line, but for us, it was worth the price in good food!

    (4)
  • karin L.

A 'Japanese' greasy spoon. The food here was practically inedible. The tempura batter was thick and SOOOOOOO greasy. Even the age dashi tofu had grease floating in the sauce. The hot sake was boiling hot, not how hot sake is meant to be served. The wait staff was unhelpful to the point of rude. On the up side, the edemame was good--hard to screw that one up, though it does happen. The place is very popular so I suppose our party of 5 is a lone voice in the wind. We all felt the same and were slamming mints after dinner trying to get the bad taste out of our mouths. If you like Japanese food, go somewhere else.

Nice hidden sushi restaurant, with well priced and good quality sushi. They also have noodle, katsu, and rice dishes for those scared of raw fish. Three sushi chefs ready to slice and dice! By the way, drive to the back of the restaurant...more parking and you feel like a VIP going in through the backdoor.

Let me start by saying Edomasa USED TO BE MY FAVORITE SUSHI IN TOWN. Now they suck! The past 3 times I've been there have been awful. I got food poisoning, horrible service and racist treatment. They used to have amazing quality of fish, not anymore. They raised their prices so now it's a super rip off. Just this last time I went the hostess wouldn't seat me and my boyfriend, but seated the Asian guy right after he walked in the door and we had been standing there for 10 minutes. There were lots of empty tables but the hostess ignored us and walked by us numerous times. Even after she seated the Asian guy she walked by us two or three times before the manager finally seated us. I've told all of my friends and family about the food poisoning and bad treatment and we are all boycotting you! You just lost hundreds of dollars in business (per year, no joke.) It's sad Edomasa I used to love your restaurant.

  • Doro P.

Looooooooooooooooove Edomasa. Overall I am more of the 'hole in the wall' type so this is just perfect. If you are up for something a little bit out of the ordinary choose the Flower Roll because it is wrapped in soy paper rather than sea weed.

I must confess that I got sick after eating here. Sick enough to wake up and think I was having morning sickness and pregnant. I just don't do nauseous that often and since I happen not to be pregnant then Endomasa gets the blame. Instead of getting 6 small rolls - you get three big ones. Doesn't that just mean more rice and less goodies? I really wanted to like the place but something had to have been off in the food. They also have like no salmon dishes at all though the Agedashi Tofu was yummy.

    (2)
  • Joanne R.

I recall many-a-late-nights here at edomasa. I love the variety of rolls and it's totally affordable (especially if you're a poor grad student). When I'm in town, I usually like to visit for old time's sake!

  • Jonathan S.

Edomosa is not the worst sushi in the world but it's certainly not one of the better places in Santa Barbara. If you eat here you'll be eating large rolls but in the process you'll be losing freshness, quality, and taste. The shrimp tempura and spicy tuna are much better at Arigato and considering no sushi place is cheap, I would spend more money to go somewhere else.

Today my friend and I came to the restaurant and wanted to bring some food for togo at 6:02pm. We walked to the counter for ordering but then the "blond hair Asian" waiter used a really aweful attitude to tell us that the restaurant hasn't opened yet.. so we sat down and waited for them to serve us. The other customers stepped in the next 2 seconds and that rude Asian blonde hair waiter served them right a way. I mean like why did he have to use that kind of attitude to us when we follow their schedule of open hour? And I swear they were all ready for the business ! Hope you guys won't see him there next time ! l

  • Megan T.

I went to Edomasa for the first time two nights ago and was pleasantly surprised by the menu - it's definitely a legit japanese restaurant with a lot of options apart from their sushi bar. I decided to go with the ramen, to see if it was at all like the genuine article. I ordered the pork ramen, and my boyfriend got the miso ramen. They both had chashu pork in them, and lovely opaque broth. The pork broth was a bit thin for my taste, and there wasn't a huge amount of flavor to it, but I absolutely loved the thick, slightly spicy taste of the miso ramen, so we actually switched bowls. I stole a bit of julienned ginger from the pork ramen, however, as it was an excellent touch. Although the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired (card tables and metal chairs), the service was attentive, the prices were good, and the menu expansive. I will be back!

The good news is that it's open late, aside from that one perk, this little sushi restaurant can be described really easily in one word; average. They used too much wasabi on their sashimi and nigiri for my liking. I have to admit that I am just not a fan of wasabi in general though so my opinion on that is definitely biased. As far as anything with the crab in it they use a very mayo heavy imitation grab which I personally don't prefer. I did enjoy the edamame, miso soup, and spicy tuna rolls, but hey, it's basically impossible to screw those things up. The staff was friendly and we were seated very quickly which was a plus. Overall the setting is very casual and the interior is in need of some renovations.

Ummm... we were in Santa Barbara for one night, and wanted to pick up some of our beloved Edomasa sushi, since we now live in LA and miss our former favorite SB sushi joint. And we called, and they were out of rice. At 9pm on a Friday night, when they open at 6pm and still had four more hours until they closed. Huh? Minus one star, but partly because you are so delicious, Edomasa, and at our once chance to have your delicious sushi again, you failed. :-(

  • Ian M.

I'm totally perplexed by the low ratings here. This is one of my favorite sushi places! The fish is extremely fresh. This is my go-to place for Aji. Please note that I only order nigiri-zushi. The curry udon is also great! I've been here several times throughout the evening and the service has always been great. I've never been ignored, ever.

Edomasa is one of the few late-night places in SB. Everything around here closes before 8, so it's awesome to have a place where you can eat when you are starving late in the evening. The sushi is good, though rolls are better than sashimi. The fish is fresh but not melt-in-your-mouth fresh. Definitely a solid restaurant and a great post-8:00 option.

Great service, great food. I love how this place is open so late. The only few places in sb that are open late. Some of our favorites are: Yellow tail Kama Avocado Special Roll Spicy Yellowtail Hand Roll Handmade Pork Gyoza Agadashi Tofu Edomasa Salad Edomasa Roll Tokyo Roll Katsu Curry (best Japanese curry!!!! Even better than LA area) This place is awesome. That's all I have to say.

Totally inauthentic Japanese restaurant that seemed an insult to all the real Japanese eateries in California. Just having Japanese chefs and a sushi bar doesn't make you authentic. What the fuck is a Buffalo volcano roll? Who bakes sushi, and then slathers it with Buffalo sauce? It was heinous. I also tried the udon noodles and they were extremely salty. There may be other things better on the menu, but I'll never know, because I'm not coming back.

Their pork cutlet meal is to die for!!!!!!! All other small plates are unique and delicious. I usually go in for kitchen food but they have some really good uni and oysters. They are REALLY busy during weekends..

Man this place has gone down unfortunately. They have one particularly rude server there now too. She is rude and illogical. We sat at the sushi bar and requested a move to a different table that was open. After confirming with her there was no wait list and the table was completely open, she refused on grounds of who knows what. Luckily the sushi chef overheard our conversation and also told her that it didn't make sense. It's a bummer I used to love this spot.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is not that great. The air smells like dish soap and some of the tables were a bit unstable. As we walked in, there was a group of men loudly and drunkenly hitting on some girls at another table...yay men. A huge positive for the restaurant, though, was how friendly and attentive the wait staff was! Also its hours are very good...it was the only place that was open past 10:00 pm. In terms of food, it was nothing spectacular. We ordered miso with mushrooms, which had too many mushrooms and so was hard to drink; sushi, which was delicious but not exceptional; scallops in sauce and "lightly fried" chicken, which were drowned in too much sauce and not lightly fried; and mochi ice cream, which, while delicious, looked like trader joes mochi ice cream and tasted the same as well so were probably not made on the premises. I would not come back here because the food was nothing to write home about, but because of the exceptional service I would highly recommend this place as a one-time experience to a friend.

Awesome sushi place with much more than just sushi. Highly, highly recommend all of their speciality rolls but especially the Buffalo Volcano roll! Perfect spot for lunch or dinner!

3.5 stars for convenience and decent sushi. Stays open late and the quality of the sashimi and sushi isn't bad for the price you pay. Ordered the sushi / sashimi combo. It came with spicy tuna roll, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp sushi, and yellow tail, tuna, & white fish sashimi. The cuts of sashimi are generous. The sushi isn't inedible and spicy tuna is tasty. I also ordered 3 pieces of shrimp tempura which was crispy and delicious. I always order uni(sea urchin) if it's fresh and available. It was very good and worth the premium of market pricing. My gf ordered a few rolls and they looked pretty appetizing. All in all. Not the best sushi I've had...but not the worst either. Service is friendly and the hours til midnight is pretty awesome for those late night sushi dates!

Edomasa deserves 4-stars for being the only restaurant in Santa Barbara opened past 9:00pm. In fact, this sushi bar is opened until midnight most nights of the week. We come here every now and again for late night eats when we've passed up other restaurants. The food is decent, not the best. Things to try: Salmon Miso Yaki Agedashi Tofu Yellowtail Kama Salmon Carpaccio

Edomasa is a solid 3 star restaurant. Try their ramen, and you will know what I mean, or better yet, don't try their ramen. Get the spider roll because it's one of the best things they make. The ramen seems like it's an afterthought only on the menu because many people love ramen and they will ask for it. If this place put some effort into making a decent ramen, that would have my business at least once a week.

If you want to have some authentic Japanese food, you probably want to check here. Japanese chiefs and waiters, not too expensive but with qualified food. Many special rolls are really delicious! Beef sukiyaki is my favorite here.

Last week I would have given this place 4 or 5 stars but upon returning for a second visit I am not happy. First time here, I dined in. The food was pretty good and the service was as well, but it was also fairly empty as it was around 9pm. Despite the LACK OF AMBIANCE, and fact that MOST ROLLS ONLY HAVE 5 OR 6 PIECES, I left very eager to return. Second time, last night around 6pm, I wanted some take out and I thought I'd give this place another try over my regular place, Sushi Teri. BAD IDEA. It was absolutely packed, and there was really no area for me to stand and look at the menu to order takeout, I kept getting shuffled from one side of the room to the other. Then when the lady charged my card she "forgot" to tell me they add a 5% takeout charge...I spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out where the extra $2.00 came from, they also added it BEFORE tax. Annoying considering I went here thinking it would be cheaper than my usual place, only to have it end up more. Now, my main issue...I found it a little odd that the majority of their roll selection was either with tempura inside and/or drenched in spicy/sweet sauce. I wanted some fresh fish and didn't feel like paying $13 for a rainbow roll. The one roll I got that was with tempura tasted fine. But, the second roll with fresh fish tasted kind of funny, like it wasn't fresh. I get the feeling they might hide behind the tempura and all the sauces to hide the fact that the fish isn't so fresh. I could have ignored that, and assumed it was just in my head, UNTIL being woken up this morning with the worst "stomach issues" I have had in a long time. It's possible it's just a coincidence but I kind of doubt it. Might return for dine-in, in the future if other people wanted to go, but I will stick to ordering my take-out from Sushi Teri. Much better quality and my bill would have been lower and given me 8 pieces per roll instead of 5.

Sushi cravings are an expensive liability for my wife and I. Luckily for us, there's Edomasa! The sushi here is awesome, and very reasonably priced. We can go all-out and leave feeling full for under $60. We always get the spicy edamame (steamed edamame covered in some hot chili garlic sauce) and some miso soup to start. One of my favorite add-on rolls is the Ginger Shrimp roll--it's got a crisp, fresh taste that's a fun contrast to the heavier rolls we usually get. On our most recent visit we had the flower roll, which was good, but I think we realized we generally like seaweed-wrapped rolls better. We also had the Crunch Roll, which has an amazing texture because of the Panko bread crumbs (but it is a bit of a splurge at $12.50).

I came here for the first time this weekend and I was very impressed! They also have almost two pages long of appetizers! You have a lot to choose from at this place. They have great service and the sushi is delicious! They do not overdo it on the rice in the rolls, which I liked. I also ordered a hand roll, which was packed with fish! They are definitely not stingy with their fish and their prices aren't expensive. Great place for sushi!

Excited to try this place. Me and a friend went here. Like that they have late night hours for the late night crowd but unfortunately we both had a mild case of food poisoning and had different dishes with the exception of the miso (which was different as well). Mine had mushrooms in it and the other was the regular and it tasted fishy--I had a few sips and maybe that was enough to cause...well, you do not need to hear that part (TMI). My friend had the same problem...hmmmmm. Funny thing is other than coffee early in the am, neither one of us had eaten that day. I had the Japanese brown curry which was watered-down in the typical vibrant and unique flavor akin to Japanese brown curry. Additionally, I had a basic California roll cause lets face it, if you mess up on that, you are in trouble. It was not that good. My friend had (I believe it was called) the backed California roll. This was just gross to say the least and I of course sampled it due to its interesting presentation...gross though as if Mexican food had merged with Sushi. At least the prices are okay, not amazing as still too much for their watered-down curry dish. I will stick to the fresher place, Shintori Sushi Factory. They are sometimes a little slow...which is a good thing as it is fresh and worth the wait!!!

We came here for my dad's birthday a few days ago . It was very convenient that they close at 12 AM we were able to make it after my dad got out of work. The food was great (we ordered so much of it too ) I wish our server was more attentive..I ordered a glass of Chardonnay every time he came to the table right before I finish my meal my dad finally asked him to please bring my glass of wine . That was a bit disappointing I could've enjoyed it with my meal. But other than the service the food was great and we would be willing to give it a second chance

If you have low expectations in sushi and service, then this place is for you! I've been to Edomasa twice and that was TWO TIMES TOO MANY. This place is your average, overpriced sushi spot. Even though the reviews were average, I noticed the menu had a bunch of traditional Japanese options that most sushi restaurants don't offer and had high expectations. The first time my boyfriend and I came here, we ordered the deluxe love boat. It came with 6 pieces of nigiri (Tuna, halibut, eel, and crab to name a few) and 2 pieces of gukan (ikura and uni), maybe 6 slices of sashimi, a pile of ikura, and a rainbow roll for ~$45?! The sashimi was decently fresh, but the type of fish it came with were all cheap. There was nothing deluxe about it besides the gukan. I was so disappointed. For the price, we could of had a more filling and satisfying meal anywhere else. The second time we came, we ordered the deluxe sushi and two rolls. Again, very cheap sushi that was NOT worth the price. The rolls seemed so average and I could tell the quality of the nori was not that great because it seemed soggy and stale. We left even more disappointed and felt so unsatisfied. Overall, we will NOT be coming back here. I have yet to try other sushi spots in Santa Barbara because after Edomasa, I feel like no where in SB will compare to the quality of sushi I've had in the Bay Area.

For the convenience of that late night sushi run, Edomasa is there for you. I tagged along with a few friends in the evening to quench my craving for sushi, but I was hesitant (to be fair, I'm always hesitant in Santa Barbara, this is only my second location to try sushi in the area). The parking in their "lot" is atrocious, so be sure to park some ways down the block and take the quick walk. Walking in, the location is slightly cramped but nothing out-of-hand. We were seated within 10 minutes or so, but the waitress seemed a bit rushed and asked for our orders within two minutes of passing off the menus. But, once we asked for more time, she didn't come back until we waved her down. I had the Deluxe Sushi with their Edomasa Roll, the former of which included 8 pieces: _Nigiri (Unagi, Medium Tuna, Albacore, White Tuna, Yellowtail) _Sea Urchin _Salmon Roe The Sea Urchin was a first for me, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I enjoyed what was before me, so I can imagine it'll only get better (?). The rest was not bad, but I expected slightly higher quality or a larger cut for the price ($28.95) They also offer ramen here, so I'll want to give that one a run before I close the book for Edomasa. Until then, I'll be reserved to getting my sushi fix in LA. Cheers.

Edomasa is great and convenient because they're open late. But besides that, it's a great place to share a pitcher of beer and sushi. The sushi is good, but I really love the tempura udon noodle soup. I order the tempura on the side so that it's still crispy instead of soaked in the broth. The Japanese curry is also pretty good. The mochi fried ice cream is yummy for the first few bites, but starts to get really heavy after that. Service is SO friendly..very sweet people, especially Yoko :)

This is my favorite place to go for sushi without the pretense that a lot of sushi restaurants have. I've been to many sushi restaurants in town and I would say this is the only one that is always filled with Japanese people. They had a wide array of dishes that I don't see at other sushi establishments besides the usual sushi, sake, miso soup, and edamame. I've been coming here for over 12 years and I'll keep coming back!

Don't order SASHIMI from this restaurant. I ordered sashimi assortment, which comes with 6 kinds of sashimi. It taste so bad, not fresh at all, the texture feels funny, I couldn't even finish the it... We also ordered deep fried chicken, taste ok. Sushi roll combo which including California roll, salmon skin roll & spicy tuna roll, taste meh. And beef curry udon taste fine. I guess that best ones from our order is Eel roll, miso soup and cucumber salad(comes with combo) Well...at least I didn't have food poison, but won't go back again either.

I use to think they were great but we went in and my sister asked for hot sauce and they said its 50 cents in the roll and like $2 for the sauce on the side. Come on! I'm in here with 8 people and you're nickel and diming me?! I know sriracha does not cost $1 per tablespoon. Get out of here! And I made a reservation and still had to wait 20 min.

My boyfriend and I were craving Japanese so we searched up restaurants on Yelp that might be of our interest and decided to try Edomasa for dinner since the restaurant opens at 6pm. We thought that was interesting but convenient for us since we were in search of a spot for dinner! We couldn't find parking outside or across the restaurant, but we did park by the Ralph's and walk over. It did not take very long for us to be seated and the servers were very nice. I really love how vast the menu is! There's a little bit of everything: rolls, curry, ramen, bowls, various appetizers, etc. and that was really nice. Most Japanese restaurants in Santa Barbara don't carry a wide selection so this was a nice change. We ordered some miso scallops and calamari for appetizers and curry and ramen and various rolls. The food took awhile to come out but when it did, it was hot and good! The portion for the curry and the ramen were huge and we ended up not finishing it all so we had to take it home. The prices are about the same as other restaurants but what really stood out was probably the portions. Otherwise, the food was okay. I wish the sushi portions were bigger though... it seemed very little.

Came here not by choice but because there weren't many late night dining options around. Sad to say it was the lowest quality seafood around. Overpriced, low quality, super fishy fish. Menu is written in Engrish so I suggest clarifying any questions you have before you're presented with something different than you thought. Sushi rolls are mainly HUGE Rice rolls with barely any fish of choice. Look elsewhere.

I was hoping for a neighborhood sushi place to eat alone. Everything was ok. Except: somewhere between the restroom and the dining room is the kitchen and someone who works in that kitchen hawked a major lougie as I was walking past. As a customer one can't help but wonder whose food that went in. Or did it go in the sticky rice pot. After that my perception of just about everything was very poor so I hope to give this place another shot in the future.

This is a go-to, comfort food place for my boyfriend and I. They're open super late compared to the rest of Santa Barbara, and they offer such a wide variety of delicious, authentic Japanese food. I usually get the oyako don or the sukiyaki don with chicken, and both are just amazing!! And when I do go out of my comfort zone and order anything else on the menu, i'm never ever disappointed! All the waiters and waitresses are busy, buzzing around trying to serve everyone, but still very friendly! The service is very good, by the way. They open at 6 p.m. and their busiest times are usually around 8-10 p.m. especially on the weekends, but if you go around that time on a week night, it's very laid back and lovely. This is definitely a place to check out if you're ever in the area and craving Japanese meals that can accompany sushi rolls.

You don't go here for an amazing life-changing experience. You go here to get the basics, if that and to satisfy late-night sushi/sake cravings. I would not recommend this to anyone. I've suffered by getting curious and ordering their "special" rolls - ha, try special disappointment. Their spicy tuna roll = would you like some week-old ahi with your spicy-mayo sauce? Their udon was equally nondescript and mushy. Now that I called out the elephant in the sushi bar, this place is the only place that serves a form of "ikura don"... therefore I only go here for this appetizer consisting of salmon roe over shaved daikon radish. Not quite ikura don but 10x better since the radish provides a palate-cleansing contrast. I love it and for 7$, it's a worthy portion. They also have a uni traybox special for 18$ - quite a deal for how much and so far, fresh and tasty served with rice and nori strips. So until I find something similar in SB, I still go here for my ikura fix. My server has been this older short-haired Japanese woman - very nice, prompt, attentive and sweet in a motherly sense. The owner/manager (?) has an eternal frown and is rude/short - other servers seem lost sometimes.

This is not the absolute best or worst sushi stop in town. This is a great late night dinner place if you want something fishy (open late!). There is nothing special about the sushi here as it is typical without much wide variety. Not too flavorful or inspirational to the pallet. However, worth a late night taste, especially after a late movie or concert. The service is quick as well, which is always a plus in my books ;)
